Immanuel Lutheran Church in Holloway
510 Olivia Holloway, MN 56249
Ralph Raymond Hoffman was born February 15, 1938, in Tara Township, Swift County, Minnesota to parents, Verner and Alvina (Giese) Hoffman. He was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church, Fairfield Township. Ralph was raised near Danvers and attended school at District #50 through the 8th Grade. He then attended Holloway High school, graduating in 1956. On March 25, 1957, Ralph was united in marriage to his high school sweetheart, Marilyn Schuerman, at the Little Brown Church, Brookings, South Dakota. This union was blessed with almost 59 years of marriage and two children: Brenda and Danny.
He enjoyed playing high school football and was an avid fan of many sports. In 1956, Ralph enlisted in the MN National Guard, obtaining the rank of SP4, being honorably discharged in 1959. Ralph enjoyed farming and raising feeder cattle and pigs, near Holloway, until his retirement in 1997, when he and Marilyn built a house and moved to Danvers. He enjoyed doing his own mechanical repairs on equipment. He was an avid bowler for many years and enjoyed both winter and summer sports including throwing on a horseshoe league and lawnmower tractor pulls. Loving the harvest of a large garden, the dimensions of its canvas seemed to grow each year after the plow made its annual pass. Spending time with family and friends was always an important part of daily living. Many a time working at various Holloway Summerfest and Swift County Fair activities fulfilled his days. He was a lifetime church member of Trinity-Fairfield and Immanuel-Holloway, serving in various roles, including Head Usher and Elder. Ralph was also a proud member of AMVETS Post #151 in Appleton. He enjoyed snowmobiling, reading, and playing the card game “Peanuts.”
Ralph passed away Sunday, September 15, 2019 in Appleton Area Health Services –Care Center. He attained 81 years and 7 months of age. Ralph is survived by his children: Brenda (Warren) Carpenter of Park Rapids and Dan (Julie) Hoffman of Worland, WY; three grandchildren: Alexa (Hoffman) and Jeremy Davis of St. Joseph, Dane Hoffman of New Ulm and Krista Carpenter of Moorhead; two great-grandchildren, Rory and Thea Davis; and step-great-granddaughter, Danielle Davis; sister-in-law, Dorothy Hoffman of Benson; and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
