Cory Lynn Braaten

Cory Lynn Braaten, 46, of Benson, Minn., formerly of Carlos, died Sunday, August 11, 2019, surrounded by her loving family, at Knute-Nelson Care Center in Alexandria.  Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m., Friday, August 16, 2019 at the Benson High School.  Visitation will continue 10-11 a.m., followed by the Funeral Service at 11 a.m., Saturday, August 17, 2019, at the Benson High School.  Interment will be in Pleasant Mound Cemetery in Carlos.  In lieu of flowers, Memorials are preferred to Prairie Five and Friends of the Library.


Cory was born on September 29, 1972, in Alexandria, MN to James and Debra (Eaton) Braaten. She was baptized February 4, 1973 at Clotho Methodist Church by Rev. Johnson. She was confirmed at Carlos Trinity Lutheran Church by Pastor Peterson. Cory lived the entirety of her childhood on the Braaten’s hobby farm. She attended Carlos Elementary School, and then went on to Central Middle School in Alexandria, MN. She graduated from Jefferson Senior High, and went on to pursue a degree in Elementary Education at Concordia College in Moorhead, MN. After college, she found her first teaching job at Northside Elementary School in Benson, MN. She stayed at Northside for her entire teaching career of 24 years. She also received her Master’s Degree during that time.

Cory enjoyed helping others through her service at Prairie Five, Friends of the Library, Women of Today, and Kid Day, among many other organizations. She also helped out at the Spelling Bee, Track and Field meets, and the backpack program. She coached both basketball and volleyball during her teaching career. She loved kayaking, playing games, watching movies, camping, shopping, and traveling. She adored her family and enjoyed spending time with them, along with her numerous friends.

Cory is survived by her parents, Jim and Debbie Braaten; sisters, Tracy Braaten, and Cary (Steve) Jobe; nephew, Dalton Jobe; niece, Katie Jobe; and many other loving relatives and friends. Cory was preceded in death by her grandparents, Leo and Irene Eaton, as well as Palmer and Margaret Braaten; aunts, Mary Braaten, Irene Braaten, Linda Braaten, and Marilyn Creamer; uncles, Gene Braaten, Gordon Zimmel, and Dave Creamer; and cousins, Kim Tisland and Steven Braaten.
