Renetta D. Schliemann, age 97, of Benson, died Thursday evening, August 1st at Homestead Place North in Benson. Visitation will be held 4-7 p.m., Thursday, August 8th at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Benson. Visitation will resume from 10-11 a.m., followed by the funeral at 11 a.m., Friday, August 9th at the church. Pastor Jason Wolter will officiate. Burial will be in the Appleton City Cemetery.
Renetta Dorothea Schliemann was born October 18, 1921 in Shible Township, Swift County, Minnesota, the daughter of Adolph and Augusta (Stock) Munstermann. She was baptized November 13, 1921 by Rev. Wechter and was confirmed April 14, 1935 by Rev. Paul Gierke, both at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Shible Township. On October 15, 1941, Renetta was united in marriage to Manville C. Schliemann at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Shible Township by Rev. Paul Gierke. They shared 62 ½ happy years together and were blessed with five children.
Renetta attended Shible Immanuel Parochial School through eighth grade and Appleton Public High School through ninth grade. Renetta did domestic housework, babysitting, worked at the Big Stone Canning Factory and Fingerhut. She loved the farm life and most enjoyed milking cows and working alongside Manville in the field and barn. She had a big garden and did a lot of canning, freezing and pickling. Renetta especially enjoyed decorating and baking for the Christmas holiday.
Renetta served on the school board for Big Stone County District 52, Artichoke Township. She was an active member in the Ladies Guild at Grace Lutheran Church in Correll and the LWML at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Benson. She was a member of the Homemaker’s Club and Birthday Club in Artichoke Township, Big Stone County. In retirement Renetta and Manville did a lot of fishing, gardening, quilting, and then they would fish some more. She enjoyed getting together with neighbors and friends to play whist, pinochle, setting puzzles and embroidery. In her free time she would read the newspapers, her bible, and daily devotions.
Renetta was called from this life on August 1, 2019, surrounded by her family, at Homestead North in Benson. She attained 97 years, 9 months, and 15 days of age. Renetta is survived by her children: Myron Schliemann of Appleton, Eunice (Arlyn) Sachs of Otsego, Donna (Gene) Anderson of Benson, Lorene Thomas of Leonard, ND and Alan (Jean) Schliemann of Benson; 19 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great grandchildren; siblings: Evelyn Giese, Verna Quandt, and Adolph Munstermann, Jr.; brother-in-law, Elroy (Mary) Schliemann; sister-in-law, Ellen Munstermann; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Manville; parents, Adolph and Augusta Munstermann; parents-in-law, Adolph and Amanda Schliemann; brothers: Walter (Mabel) Munstermann, Elmer (Emily) Munstermann, Ronald (Vivilor) Munstermann, Albert (Vivilore) Munstermann, and Melvin Munstermann; sister, Bertha (William) Harste; sisters-in-law, Cheryl Munstermann, Bernice (John) Koosmann, Delores (Victor) Storm, and Ardith (David) Hills; brothers-in-law: Ray Giese, Donald Quandt, and Harry (Evelyn) Schliemann; son-in-law, Erland Wateland; grandson, Miles Thomas; granddaughter, Lonetta Schliemann; great-granddaughters: Candice and Tina Bruzek; and several nieces and nephews.
