Irene Rachel (Hill) Carl was born January 31, 1920, in Minneapolis, Minnesota to Bernard and Hazel (Ceaser) Hill. Later they moved to a farm south of Correll where she attended Country School. The family then moved to a farm north of Correll where she attended high school at School District 55 through the 11th grade.
Irene married Chester Carl on August 26, 1938 at Milbank, SD. This union was blessed with 69 years together and 3 children: Patricia, Joan, and Chester II. The couple started to farm together on the family farm. In 1949, they purchased the present farm northwest of Correll, where Irene lived until she entered the Care Center.
She enjoyed cooking and baking for family and friends and always entertained family for the Holidays. Irene especially loved to make treats for her grandchildren. She also liked to garden and was known for keeping a well-groomed yard. Irene was a long-time member of the First Congregational Church in Appleton, where she served on the Women’s Fellowship and enjoyed participating in the Bazaars and suppers.
Irene passed away Sunday, June 30, 2019 in the Wilmot Care Center, Wilmot, SD. She attained 99 years, 4 months, and 29 days of age. Irene is survived by her daughters: Patricia (Charles) Korstjens of rural Big Stone City, SD and Joan Korstjens of Ortonville; daughter-in-law, Cheryl Carl of Ortonville; 5 grandchildren: Melissa (Allen) Drexler of Carlos, Anthony (Shala) Korstjens of Correll, Chester (Barbara) Carl III of Ortonville, Michelle (Matt) Paulsen of Canby, Lisa Korstjens of Alexandria; 1 granddaughter-in-law, Janelle Korstjens of rural Big Stone City, SD; 8 great-grandchildren: Samantha Henkel, Brianna and Bret Korstjens, Nycole, Jenna, and Jayden Korstjens, Mackenzie Drexler, Emersyn Paulsen; 2 step-great-grandchildren, Alex Gonzalez and Jordan Gonzalez (fiancée, Sarah Beals); sister-in-law, Leona Carl; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Chester “Chet” Carl in 2007; her parents, Bernard and Hazel Hill; her son, Chester Carl II; her grandson, Charles “Chip” Korstjens; son-in-law, George Korstjens; 2 brothers; and 1 sister.
