Mary K. Matthews, 90, of Willmar, Minn., formerly of Murdock, died Saturday, May 11, 2019, at Copperleaf senior living facility in Willmar. Visitation will be from 10-11 a.m., followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m., Monday, May 20, 2019, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Murdock. Private interment will be in the Church Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the American Canver Society, Willmar Hospice, or donor’s choice.
Preceded in death by her loving husband of 61 years Jim, nephew Dan Matthews, parents James and Edna Simon, and brother-in-law Leo Furr. Survived by sisters Yvonne Furr, Donna (John) Coughlin, and brother Jim (Christine) Simon as well as many nieces, nephews and friends.
Mary was born August 15, 1928 and grew up in Boardman, Wisconsin. Mary was a graduate of the College of St. Catherine in Saint Paul Minnesota in 1948 where she studied early education. Mary’s first job was a first grade teacher in Murdock, Minnesota. Mary enjoyed teaching so much and she was beloved by all of her students that she taught school in Murdock for 35 years! Mary was a lifetime member of the VFW Auxiliary. She was very involved with Sacred Heart Church in Murdock and she enjoyed quilting as well as church dinners and attending mass. Mary was a recipient of the New Ulm diocese Bishop award for her many years of service to the church. Mary also farmed many years with her husband Jim and they both enjoyed vacationing in their winter home in Mesa, Arizona. Jim and Mary moved from their farm to the Copperleaf senior living facility in Willmar in 2009. Mary enjoyed her home at Copperleaf as well as the many new friends she met there over the past ten years. Mary was such a kind, generous and loving person and she will be missed by many. Mary and her family wish to thank the entire Copperleaf and hospice staff as well as all of her family and friends that have supported her throughout her life but especially during the last few months.
