Frances Ann (Powell) Larson was born October 4, 1928, in Lac qui Parle County, Minnesota, the daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth Dora (Hermeling) Powell. She was baptized November 17, 1928, and confirmed July 13, 1939 at St. John’s Catholic Church in Appleton, Minnesota. She grew up in the Appleton area and attended Appleton High School through the 10th grade. Frannie started working at Wards department store when she was 14 years old. [She lied about her age and said she was 16.] She also worked at Smith Cafe in Appleton when she was 17. On May 25, 1947, Frances was united in marriage to Anver Melvin Larson in San Francisco, California. This union was blessed with more than 50 years of marriage and three children.
She was a wonderful mother and homemaker. Frances also managed Apartment Buildings in St. Paul. After tragically losing their son, Ron, in 1971, they opened and operated “Our Place Café”. This was the hangout place for kids of all ages in Bellingham, MN until 1988. She was a life member of the VFW Post 4955 Auxiliary and a member of the American Legion, DAV, and was a Gold Star Mother.
Known for her mischievous ways, at age 14 she and her sister, Lorraine, sold the family sheep and took a train trip to California without permission or parental knowledge. She loved going to the casino, gambling, playing scratch-off tickets and opening pull tabs. Fran enjoyed Bingo, walking, and going to rummage sales. One of her favorite things was getting together with family members and talking about the “good ole days”. She always loved helping others and spending time with her grandkids. Fran was known for her "high kicks" and demonstrated them at her 80th birthday party. She proudly drove her car in Minneapolis well into her 80's. Her favorite saying after her little adventures was: “Well, I had fun!”.
Frances was called from this life Wednesday, March 27, 2019, at Mt. Olivet Home in Minneapolis, MN. She attained the age of 90 years, 5 months and 23 days.
