James Darrell Sandstrom

June 1, 1941 — March 11, 2019

James Darrell Sandstrom, 77, of Benson, Minn., died Monday, March 11, 2019, at Carris Health Rice Memorial Hospital. Visitation will be from 9-10:30 a.m., followed by the Funeral Service at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, March 20, 2019, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Benson. Interment will be held at a later date in the Benson City Cemetery.

James Darrell Sandstrom was born June 1, 1941 in Sioux City, Iowa, the son of Willard Reginald and Margaret Marie (DuVall) Sandstrom. He was baptized July 14, 1944 by Rev. J. Swedberg and confirmed December 12, 1954 by Rev. Robert Olson at Trinity Lutheran Church in Benson, Minnesota. He grew up on the farm in Benson Township and graduated from the Benson School system and the Chicago Vocation School for Welding in Minneapolis. On September 10, 1966, James was united in marriage to Elenora Wade Pelkey at St. Francis de Sales Church in Belgrade by Rev. Victor Kinzer. They renewed their wedding vows on September 10, 2016 in celebration of their 50th Wedding Anniversary at Trinity Lutheran Church in Benson.

Jim lived in Benson all his life. He worked at Quinns Implement Dealer, as a bus driver for Benson School District, custodian for Benson School District, and Deli Manager at Holiday in Benson. Jim loved spending time with family and friends. He enjoyed his early morning forays to the Benson Bakery or Holiday for his coffee and paper. After retiring in 2006, he enjoyed camping and meeting new people. James was a caring son and brother, a loving husband, a wonderful father, a great grandfather, a good uncle, and a friend to all he met and had the gift of gab.

Jim passed away Monday, March 11, 2019, at Carris Health Rice Memorial Hospital. He attained the age of 77 years, 9 months, and 10 days. He is survived by his wife, Elenora Sandstrom; children: Mary Sandstrom (Neil Hill) of Minneapolis; Kris Sandstrom of Willmar; and Reginald Sandstrom of Grove City; grandchildren: Cody Sandstrom, Brian Sandstrom, Krista (Kory) Kurkosky, and Madyson Sandstrom; great-grandson, Kamden Kurkosky; siblings, Rosemary (Steve) Petersen of DeGraff and Gerald Sandstrom of Benson.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Willard and Margaret Sandstrom; foster brother, Clarence Ellingboe; and sister, Shirley Sandstrom. Blessed be the memory of James Darrell Sandstrom.
