Patrice “Sis” Bass died suddenly at her home on February 14th, 2019.
Patrice is survived by her two loving sisters, Paulette (Dick) Collins and Pamela Bass; her dear friend Sherry Kowski, nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, great great nieces and nephews, close friends, and JP’s family.
She was preceded in death by her husband John “JP” Freeman, her parents, Calvin and Evangelin (Wagner) Bass, her younger sister Penny Pangrac, her mother and father in law Don and Helen Freeman, and her sister in law Judy (Don) Rodel.
Patrice Calleen Bass was born January 14, 1955 in Mankato, Minnesota. Patrice grew up in Mapleton and later Murdock where she graduated as Valedictorian from Murdock High School. In 1973 she attended the University of Minnesota Morris. She completed a Bachelor Degree in Social Science. She later attended St. Cloud State and received a degree in Education. She pursued graduate work in Archival Preservation.
In 1979 Patrice was united in marriage to John “JP” Patrick Freeman at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Murdock. She and JP resided in Onamia, Minnesota.
Patrice worked as a chef at Crosier Seminary in Onamia. She worked for the St. Paul Park System, primarily at Como Park, where she cleaned, cataloged and preserved thousands of old photos and documents. Through her research they were able to locate lost treasures at the park. She later worked at the Grand Casino Mille Lacs as a blackjack dealer and then became their main money counter. She worked for the Mille Lacs County Health System at Mille Lacs County Hospital as a Ward Secretary and then trained in the Pharmacy and became a Pharmacy Tech. Patrice’s sharpness always made her the “go to gal”.
Someone once said “Patrice is like a magical fairy who just flies in and makes things better”. She made things better for all of us.
Patrice loved spending time with family and friends. This always involved her amazing cooking. She loved hosting the gourmet club. She was famous in our family for her corned brisket and her smoked meat. Summers at the lake frequently involved a feast, at the center, Sis’s meat.
She was always so interested in what her nieces and nephews and the great nieces and nephews were doing and how they were. She loved spending time with them and watching them grow. She was called the “Donut Aunt”. On one special summer weekend she would provide them with an array of “Donut Creatures” from Cold Spring Bakery.
She loved to travel and loved to learn. Her traveling always involved learning. She was a wealth of information about so many subjects. More than likely Patrice could answer any question posed to her.
Sis is and will forever be so terribly missed. She was a kind, generous, and loving soul.
