Walter Fred Gades was born May 7, 1938 on the home farm in Fairfield Township, Swift County, Minnesota, the son of Carl and Laura (Suckow) Gades. He was baptized, at home, on May 12, 1938 and was confirmed May 18, 1952 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Fairfield Township. Walter was raised in rural Holloway, where he attended Country School during his grade school years and during his high school years he attended the West Central School of Agriculture in Morris. He was a member of the Minnesota National Guard for 15 years. On September 6, 1969 he was united in marriage to Vonda Mae Sachs at Trinity Lutheran Church, Fairfield Township, by Rev. William Natzke. This union was blessed with over 35 years together and three children: Naomi, Sarah, and Jeremy.
Walter loved agriculture and was involved with it in some way during his entire life. He raised registered spotted swine for over 25 years, where he had the opportunity to show his hogs across the U.S., receiving many champions and even a national champion. Walter farmed for many years and then worked for area farmers and hog producers. Just before retirement he drove semi for West-Con. Over the years he was involved with many groups and organizations, including: Life-long member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Fairfield, where he served as a past Elder, and LLL member; State Spotted Swine Association, serving as President; Moyer Eagles 4-H Club, serving as an adult leader; Trailblazer’s Saddle Club; Swift County Pork Producers; and Swift County Board of Commissioners. Walter enjoyed gardening, tending to fruit trees, and fishing.
Walter passed away Thursday, November 1, 2018 in Appleton Area Health Services –Care Center. He attained 80 years, 5 months, and 28 days of age. Walter is survived by his children: Dr. Naomi Gades (Leonardo Llames) of Rio Verde, AZ, Sarah (Troy) Tyson of Zumbro Falls, and Jeremy (Jodi) Gades of Holloway; five grandchildren: Grace and Laura Llames, Gavin Tyson, Parker and Tamsyn Gades; mother-in-law, Emma Radcliffe of Appleton; sisters-in-law, Diane Hanson and Mary Sachs, both of Appleton; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Laura Gades; and wife, Vonda in 2005. Blessed be the memory of Walter Fred Gades.
