Donald “Donnie” Albert Schlieman was born March 30, 1922 in Appleton, Minnesota, the son of Robert and Martha (Thielke) Schlieman. He was baptized April 23, 1922 and was confirmed April 5, 1936, both by Rev. Faedke. Donnie attended school in Appleton and graduated Class of 1940. On June 20, 1948 he was united in marriage to Marlys Reich by Rev. Walther at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Holloway. This union was blessed with 60 years together and three children: Kathi, Mark, and Susan.
Donnie served in active military duty with the United States Army during WWII and Korea, attaining the rank of First Sergeant. After his discharge from the Army, Donnie joined the Minnesota National Guard. He was a life-long resident of Appleton. Donnie worked as a mechanic for Schoening & Huckle for several years and was a long-time employee of City of Appleton, where he drove the city bus and was custodian for the Civic Center for 21 years. He was a long-standing member of Trinity Lutheran Church and was also a member of the Appleton Fire Department from 1947 to 1967. Donnie had a love of trains…they fascinated him. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Donnie passed away Monday, June 11, 2018 in Appleton Area Health Services –Care Center. He attained 96 years, 2 months, and 11 days of age. Donnie is survived by his children: Kathi (Todd) Fink of Louisburg, Mark (Linda) Schlieman of Madison, and Susan Arnold (Dan Nelson) of Alexandria; 7 grandchildren: Chad (Lynn) Fink, Stacey (Wyatt) Bonnema, Kristin (Dan) Gates, Ryan (Ashley) Schlieman, Katie (Blayne) Johnson, Jacob (Crystal) Arnold, and Chris Arnold; 12 great-grandchildren: Cole Fink, Lauren, Hattie, and Ava Gates, Madilynn and Jack Schlieman, Clara and Lucy Johnson, Brayden, Mara, Beckett, and Mack Arnold; brother, Dale (JoAnn) Schliemann of Yakima, WA; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Martha Schlieman; his wife, Marlys Schlieman; 4 sisters: LaVerne (Orrie) Avelsgaard, Renetta (Glenn) Lund, Myrtle (Calvin) Hering, and Marlys Schlieman; and 2 brothers: Harold Schlieman and Eddie Schlieman.
