Our Redeemer's Lutheran Church
800-10 th St. S Benson, MN 56215
Dean Delroy Evenson was born June 17, 1936 on the family farm in rural Benson, the youngest of 12 children to Edwin and Emilie (Gilsrud) Evenson. He was baptized and confirmed at Our Saviours Lutheran Church in Benson. He was raised on the family farm and attended country school through the 8th grade. He attended high school for 1 ½ years and at that time going full-time farming, assisting his parents due to his dad’s physical disability. Upon his parents retirement in 1958, he purchased the livestock and continued the farm operation until the spring of 1963.
On May 4, 1963 he married the love of his life, Shirley Schulz at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Wood Lake, Mn. After marriage they made their home in Minneapolis, where he worked for Alumacraft Boat Company. Having joined the National Guard in Appleton in 1966, he reported for basic training in March 1967 to Fort Bragg, NC and on completion went to the Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland for schooling in Fire Control Instrument Repair. Upon completion of the Military training he returned to their home in Minneapolis, and at that time made the decision to return to the family farm which they purchased from his parents, knowing that is what he wanted to make his life’s work and making their home in the country. He retired in 2014, but assisted his son, Kent, with the farm work until the time of his death. Through the years of farming he served on many boards, which he enjoyed working with other board members – Swenoda Township Treasurer, Kerkhoven Hayes Mutual, Glacial Plains Co-Op, Farm Bureau Board, and several church boards – church council, Trust Fund, Property Board and Cemetery Board. He taught Sunday school for a short time. He enjoyed family camping, family reunions, family gatherings, his children’s sports and activities and all the grandchildren’s sports and school activities. He also enjoyed playing cards and visiting friends.
