Helen Lucille Barbara (Strommen) Svor was born June 7, 1922 to Oscar and Mabel (Halvorson) Strommen on a farm in Pope County and Baptized Lutheran. Helen attended country school until the 8th grade and then attended Glenwood High School thru the 10th grade.
On March 18, 1942 she was married to Walter Sydney Svor at the Rolling Forks Parsonage in Pope County. They resided at the family farm their entire married life.
Helen stayed home and cared for their children and home. She worked for Fingerhut in Benson which later became Future Products. Her last job was at Meadow Lane in the dietary department, which she really liked. She was always smiling and was kind to the residents and staff. She moved to the High Rise in spring of 2001. She entered as a resident at Meadow Lane on January 27, 2004.
She was a member of Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church and prior to their formation, a member of the St. Pauli Church. She was active in the WELCA, Circle, and taught Sunday School. She wrote the Prairie News for the Swift County Monitor for years.
Helen liked to cook, bake, and can pickles and fruit sauce. She loved to entertain family with meals and lunches. Sundays there were usually relatives visiting the Svor farm and Helen would put on a spread of food and usually sent home plates of goodies with the visitors. When her children grew up, she became a favorite of her nieces and nephews. They would come and stay at the farm with Auntie Helen and Uncle Walter. Then as the grandchildren started arriving, she loved caring for them and showing pictures of them. Helen attended all the events and concerts with her trusty cassette tape recorder. She always had a camera in hand to take picture of the grandkids. Celebrating birthdays was very important to Helen. She would also take the time to stop and visit with people at home, in the hospital, or nursing home.
