Elsie Elfrieda (Platow) Ahrndt was born May 7, 1920, in Moyer Township, Swift County, Minnesota, the daughter of Ferdinand and Martha (Reich) Platow. She was baptized May 30, 1920, by. Rev. E.A. Welke and confirmed May 20, 1934, by Rev. E.J. Kaiser at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Moyer Township. Elsie grew up in the Danvers and Holloway area and attended country school and Holloway High School.
Elsie was united in marriage to Carl Herman Ahrndt on November 20, 1940, by Rev. A.R. Wachholz at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Moyer Township, Swift County. This union was blessed with 41 years of marriage; 4 sons and one daughter; 15 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren. Elsie was employed at Future Products and later for 13 years in the dietary department at SCBH. They resided on the family farm in Six Mile Grove until April of 1967, when they retired and built a home in Benson.
Elsie was a member of Redeemer’s Lutheran Church in Danvers until it closed. She was then a member of Our Redeemer’s Lutheran Church in Benson until her death. She was a member of a homemakers group, mother’s club of Dist. 88, and Ladies Auxiliary of the VFW. She enjoyed ice fishing, traveling, gardening (flowers and vegetables), beading doilies and baskets, crocheting, baking, ceramics, dancing, playing cards, and was musically gifted on the piano and accordion. She loved spending time with family and friends and attending 4-H and school activities for her grandchildren.
She continued to reside in their home after Carl’s death in 1982. In October of 2010 she became a resident of Golden Living Center in Benson and moved to Gabriel House in Murdock on April 1, 2015. Elsie passed away January 17, 2018, at Gabriel House. She attained the age of 97 years, 8 months and 10 days.
She is survived by her children: Carl R. (LeAnn) Ahrndt of Danvers, Sheldon (Jan) Ahrndt of Harrisburg, SD, Sharon K. (John) Jergenson of Benson, Larry (Kylene) Ahrndt of Benson, and Randall (Linda) Ahrndt of Litchfield; grandchildren: Annette Robertson, Kevin Jergenson, Kim Ahrndt, Alan Jergenson, Thomas Ahrndt, Trevor Ahrndt, Stacie Jergenson, Andrea Gross, Laurie Dokken, Anthony Ahrndt, Roxanne McGlothlen, Adam Ahrndt, Luke Ahrndt, Derek Ahrndt, and Amy Chance; great-grandchildren: Mariah Dokken, Nathan Dokken, Sam Dokken, Carter Gross, Brady Gross, Bennett Gross, Jack McGlothlen, Blake McGlothlen, Kate McGlothlen, Joshua Ahrndt, Brandon Ahrndt, Shawna Aakre, Cole Robertson, Cade Robertson, Evan Robertson, Brianna Ahrndt, Dylan Ahrndt, Jordan Ahrndt, Elle Ahrndt, Angelyn Chance, Lacey Ann Chance, Riley Ahrndt, Alissa Ahrndt, Jade Ahrndt, Kelsi Lye, and Kali Unke; great-great-grandchildren: Mandie Marie Aakre, Landon Aakre, Jayse Ahrndt, and Bennett Lye; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Ferdinand and Martha (Reich) Platow; husband, Carl H. Ahrndt on April 1, 1982; grandchildren, Michael S. Ahrndt and Angela Ahrndt; great-grandson, Ross McGlothlen; brothers, Alfred Platow and Bernard “Ben” Platow; and sisters: Bertha Beyer, Dorothy Stelzig, Esther Thielke and Eleanor Heike; and several nieces and nephews.
