Jerome L. “Jerry” Johannessen, 86, Benson, Minn., died Monday, January 8, 2018, at his home. Visitation will be from 5–7 p.m., Friday, January 19, 2018, at Our Redeemer’s Lutheran Church in Benson. Visitation will continue from 12–1 p.m., followed by the Funeral Service at 1 p.m., Saturday, January 20, 2018, at the church. Interment will be in the Benson City Cemetery.
Jerome Lyle Johannessen was born June 22, 1931, at the hospital in Benson. Minnesota, the son of Ragnvald “Norsk” Johan Olav and Selma Irene (Axness) Johannessen. He was baptized June 23, 1931, with baptismal sponsors B. Steve, Mabel Axness and Edna Axness. Jerry was confirmed June 2, 1946, at Immanuel Lutheran Church by Rev. M. G. Berg. He grew up in Benson and graduated from high school. Jerry then attended the Dunwoody Technical Institute in Minneapolis and graduated with a degree in Pastry Making and Cake Decorating.
On November 14, 1949, Jerry was united in marriage to Carol M. Tollefson in South Dakota. They made their home in Benson where they owned and operated the Benson Bakery and Café. This union was blessed with more than 68 years of marriage, seven children, 12 grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren.
Jerry was a member of the Retail Bakers of America, Upper Midwest Bakery Association, the Benson Chamber of Commerce and served as President in 1976, the Masonic Lodge, Sons of Norway, Gideons International, Grace Partners Outreach, and Our Redeemer’s Lutheran Church where he served as a funeral and service usher. Among the many things he enjoyed were dancing with his partner Carol, sailing, traveling, spending time at the lake, gathering with family and friends, baking and cake decorating, men’s bible study, golf league, playing cards and doing puzzles. He loved a good challenging puzzle. Jerry received the Upper Midwest Bakers Association Hall of Fame Award in March, 2017.
Jerry passed away Monday, January 8, 2018, at his home. He attained the age of 86 years, 6 months and 16 days.
Jerry is survived by his wife, Carol M. Johannessen; children: Gary Johannessen (friend, Aileen), Kim Johannessen (Bonnie), Cynthia Thronson (Jon), Toby Johannessen (Deb), Melissa Johannessen-Janzen (Jeff), and Debbie Johannessen (daughter-in-law); grandchildren: Brooke Amundson, Dana Amundson (Cindy), Kelly Majkovak (Robert), Ramon Johannessen (Hope), Adrian Johannessen-Hawkins (Maipacher), Dominique Johannessen-Hawkins (Brair), Tonya Johannessen and fiancé Andrew Fath, Ebony Johannessen-Hawkins, Alexis Johannessen, Eva Johannessen, Rae Johannessen, and Tess Johannessen; great-grandchildren: Joey Schutz, Autumn Johannessen, Elijah Johannessen-Hawkins, Adelyn Johannessen, Ariel Johannessen-Hawkins, Austin Amundson, Ezekiel Johannessen-Hawkins, Grayson Majkovak, Aynsley Johannessen, Amelia Johannessen, Levi Majkovak, and Logan Amundson; brothers-in-law: Richard, Doug and Gale (Pat); sisters-in-law: June (Larry)Muetzel,Yvonne Comp and Judy Tollefson; cousin, Alan Marble; and many special nieces and nephews and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Irene and Norsk Johannessen; son, Dale S. Johannessen; daughter, Gay L. Amundson; sisters-in-law, Rose Tollefson and Judy Tollefson; brothers-in-law, Glen Tollefson and Dex Comp; and cousin, Denny Marble.
Jerry was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather. He always made time for friends with a smile on his face. He was a kind and gentle man who will be deeply missed.
