Harry Sherman Klyve was born in Rolling Forks Township, Pope County, the son of John and Magnhild (Libak) Klyve, on March 30, 1919. He attained the age of 98 years, 7 months, 5 days. Harry was baptized and confirmed at the Rolling Forks Lutheran Church by Rev. G.G. Beito. He attended the local school until 8th grade and subsequently received his GED at Glenwood High School. He enjoyed taking numerous courses at University of Morris. He completed additional educational training at Hanson Auto and Diesel at Fargo. At a very young age he worked for different farmers, for Barsness Construction doing blasting and driving truck and for the CCC (Civilian Conservation Corp) clearing the Gunflint Trail. Moving to Montana he worked on a ranch until 1941 when he joined the U. S. Army in Cheyenne, Wyoming. He was promoted to Corporal, Sargent, Staff Sargent and Platoon Sargent during his military time. He survived 5 beach landings which included the invasion in Africa, November 2, 1942, serving under General Patton, an invasion of Sicily and D Day in Anzio, Italy and north of Rome, then to Strasbourg, France and Germany, Battle of the Bulge, where he was wounded and spent 3 months in an English hospital. Harry received two Purple Hearts, 5 Bronze Battle Stars, 1 Silver Battle Star as well as other awards during his 57 months of military service.

On June 23, 1946, he married Gylia (Gaye) Tharaldson at the East Zion Church. They farmed for two years and then moved to Seattle, Washington where Harry worked at Boeing Aircraft. In 1955 they moved back to the farm and lived there until retirement. (But he never really retired!) Harry served on the township board for 40 years, school board, Starbuck Hospital board, Pope County Zoning board, Church board, School board, First Responders, State Tax and Finance Commission. He was a Commander and member of VFW, a member also of DAV, American Legion and Purple Heart service organizations.

Harry was an avid hunter, conservationist, cared deeply for the land he farmed, had a strong faith in the Lord and loved his family above all else. He was an honest and caring man who was always willing to lend a helping hand, share an opinion, tell a story and fully enjoyed his life and never quit looking towards the future.

He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Gaye Klyve of Benson, MN, daughter Vicki (Les) Kapaun, Mendota Heights, MN, son Dean (Edie) Klyve, Belle Fourche, SD, 7 grandchildren, James (Kelly) Townsend, John (Amy) Townsend, Nathan Abdallah and Elena Abdallah, Emily Kapaun, Karla Kapaun, Laura (Al) DeBeers, and 8 great-grandchildren, brother Melvin (Marlys), great-nephew John Klyve and great-niece Kristin Fennell, and many nieces and nephews as well as numerous extended family. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Arne Klyve, sisters Myrtle Arness and Gladys Klyve, and nephew Dale Klyve.
