Madeline “Jiggs” Cecelia Hughes, 85, died Tuesday, October 24, 2017, at home in Benson, Minn. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m., Friday, October 27, 2017, at St. Francis Catholic Church in Benson. Visitation will continue from 9-10 a.m., followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m., Saturday, October 28, 2017, at Church of the Visitation Catholic Church in Danvers. Interment will be in the Church Cemetery. Memorials are preferred to Swift County Benson Health Services and Rice Hospice.
Madeline “Jiggs” Cecelia Hughes was born May 3, 1932, in Morgan, Minnesota, the daughter of John and Mary (Plotz) Hofmann. She was baptized on May 5, 1932, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Morgan. She had her first communion on July 2, 1944, and was confirmed on July 23, 1946, at St. Matthias Catholic Church in Wanda, MN.
Jiggs grew up in the Wanda area, where she attended grade school. She attended high school in Lamberton through ninth grade and then completed her GED. On May 25, 1951, Madeline was united in marriage to Thomas Anthony Hughes in Benson, MN. This union was blessed with more than 40 years of marriage, 8 children, 9 grandchildren, and 4 great-grandchildren.
Jiggs enjoyed being a farm wife, raising 8 loving children with Tom, and later to become a grandmother and great-grandmother. She was a member of the Danvers Homemakers, Red Hat Society, Bowling League, and Altar Rosary Guild. Among the many things she enjoyed were golfing, fishing, painting, sewing, crocheting, beading, cooking, and bowling. Most of all, she loved being with her family.
She was called from this life on Tuesday, October 24, 2017, at home in Benson. She attained 85 years, 5 months, and 21 days of age.
Jiggs is survived by her children: Daniel (Jeena) Hughes of Glenwood, Tim (Carrie) Hughes of Danvers, Rebecca (Bill) Beard of Golden, CO, Neil Hughes of Willmar, Thomas Hughes of Benson, Matthew Hughes of Benson, Michael (Becky) Hughes of Renville, and Barbara (Dan) Damm of Prinsburg; grandchildren: Jessica (Joe) Wrobleski, Nathan (Erika) Hughes, Nicole (Chris) VanRuler, Andrew Hughes (Kayla), Peter Hughes, Peter Ludwig, Desirae (Nick) Carlson, Alexis Damm, Emily Hughes (Andy), and Mitchell Hughes; great-grandchildren: Madilyn and Paige Wrobleski, Mya VanRuler, and Blake Hughes; brother, Johnny Hofmann of Sanborn; and sister, Magdeline “Maggie” Schroedl (Bob) of Glenwood.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Hughes on April 15, 1992; parents, John and Mary Hofmann; and siblings: Benjamin Hofmann, Betty Schenk, Joe Hofmann, Patty Lou Baune, and Frankie Hofmann.
