Phyllis R. Harstad, 90, died Sunday, October 8, 2017, at Douglas County Hospital in Alexandria, Minn. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m., Thursday, October 19, 2017, at Zniewski Funeral Home in Benson. Visitation will continue from 12-1 p.m., followed by the funeral at 1 p.m., Friday, October 20, 2017, at West Zion Lutheran Church in rural Hancock. Interment will be in the West Zion Lutheran Church Cemetery.
Phyllis Regina (Schliep) Harstad was born April 28, 1927, in Fairfield Township, Swift County, Minnesota, the daughter of Christ Albert and Augusta Catherine (Thielke) Schliep. She was baptized at home by Rev. C.W. Ristow on July 31, 1927. She was confirmed at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Benson by Rev. R. P. Albrecht on April 2, 1944.
Phyllis grew up in the Hegbert Township, Swift County until her family moved to Clontarf in 1939. She attended District #35 Swift County, Clontarf School and graduated in 1944 from Benson High School. On May 3, 1946, Phyllis was united in marriage to Oliver Harstad by Rev. Erwin Vaudt at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church. This union was blessed with more than 54 years of marriage, 3 children, 8 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and 4 great-great-grandchildren.
Phyllis worked as a waitress in Benson, and then at Northway Grocery from 1963 to 1971, and Wigfield’s Department Store from 1971 to 1989. She was the Clerk of Hoff Township, Pope County in 1974 to 2004. Phyllis was a member of West Zion Lutheran Church. She enjoyed quilting, gardening, and fishing.
She was called from this life on Sunday, October 8, 2017, at Douglas County Hospital in Alexandria, Minnesota. She attained 90 years, 5 months, and 10 days of age.
Phyllis is survived by her children: Connie (Gary) Williams of Clontarf, Susan (Tom) Birhanzel of Alexandria, and Beverley (Lyle) Kruize of Hancock; grandchildren: Jackie Williams, Heidi (Jon) Thoma, Jodi (Todd) Tongen, Malisa (Peter) Ervin, Tammy (Collin) Angrimson, Darren (Cindy) Kruize, Billy Jo Kruize, and Kari (Nathan) Standfuss; great-grandchildren: Megan Thoma, Justin Thoma, Abbigail Thoma, Alexandra Tongen, Bryce Tongen, Coral (Andrew) Wehrkamp, Crystal Ervin, Morgan Ervin, Torrie Kruize, Theodore Standfuss, Austin Rosenbush, Annabelle Rosenbush, Raven Rosenbush, and Tamika Rosenbush; great-great-grandchildren: Averi Wehrkamp, Oliver Wehrkamp, Scarlett Guest, and Grace Koehl; and siblings: Lucille Reuss of Benson, Melvin (Ruth) Schliep of Hopkins, Gladys (Michael) Ascheman of Lonsdale, and Helen Klucas of Benson.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Oliver Harstad in 2002; parents, Christ and Augusta Schliep; brothers: Harry, Henry, Lawrence, Clarence, and John Schliep; sisters: Mable Schliep, Evelyn Oglesby, and Marcella Razink; and grandson, Kurt Kruize.
