Roger “Sam” Hamann was born May 8, 1948 to Roland and Ruth (Mesenbrink) Hamann in Benson MN. He was baptized at Trinity Lutheran Church, Fairfield, June 6, 1948, by Pastor Meichsner. He was confirmed May 13, 1962 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Fairfield, by Pastor Wirth. Sam grew up on the family farm in rural Holloway. He attended country school, Holloway School and graduated from Appleton High School in 1966. He went on to pursue an Associate’s Degree in Drafting at Alexandria Technical College. Following college, Sam worked as a Draftsman for Donaldson Corporation in the Twin Cities. Sam was drafted into the United States Army in 1969, and upon the return of his twin brother from Vietnam, he was deployed overseas and stationed in South Korea where he worked for I-Corps. Following his return from active duty, Sam joined the MN Army National Guard where he was assigned to Service Battery, 175 th FA. He served from 1971 to 1976. He attained the rank of Staff Sergeant.
On September 14, 1974, Sam was united in marriage to Pamela Erickson at Luther Memorial Church in So. St. Paul. This union was blessed with 3 children: Patrick, Dena, and Keely. Sam was an active member of the Appleton Jaycees, receiving numerous awards for his service. He was also involved in the Holloway Rod and Gun Club, Pheasants Forever, Ducks Unlimited, VFW Post 4955, AMVETS Post 151, and in his later years, the LTD Motorcycle Memorial Tour. Sam farmed for several years with his brother Rodney and later worked for West Con in Holloway. Sam also worked as an over-the-road trucker. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, assisting his kids with their trucks, and tinkering with small engines. He was proud of his children and adored his granddaughters.
Sam died at Appleton Area Health Services on September 30, 2017, at the age of 69. He is survived by his children: Patrick (Valerie) Hamann of rural Appleton, Dena (Richard) Daly of Appleton, and Keely Hamann of Lincoln, NE; his granddaughters, Madison and Brooklyn Daly; brother, Rodney “Joe” Hamann of Holloway; sisters, Lynnette (Bob) Phenix of Inver Grove Heights and Denise (Jeff) Tomniczak of Champlin; sister-in-law, Suzanne Hamann of Burnsville; and nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Roland and Ruth Hamann; and brother, David Hamann.
