Robert Albert Fried was born to parents Albert and Pearl (Mork) Fried on March 6, 1944 at the Madison Hospital. He was baptized and confirmed at First Lutheran Church in Madison. He grew up in rural Madison and attended country school at Dist. 64 and graduated from Madison High School in 1961. He married Diane Clark on June 20, 1964. To this union two children were born: Kristy and Daniel. He attended Moorhead State for one year and then Hanson’s Auto Body School in Fargo, ND. He and his father, Albert, started A & B Garage in Madison. Bob and his family then moved to Madison, WI, where he was a State Farm Insurance adjuster and later a State Farm agent. In 1976 they moved to Appleton where he started Concrete Builders. He later worked at Duininck, Inc. out of Prinsburg and Friendship Homes in Montevideo.
Bob was a man of many talents. Aside from being very artistic, he could fix anything…for anyone who needed something fixed. He enjoyed helping people and would have given you the shirt off his back if need be. After they moved to Appleton, Bob built their home west of Appleton, doing everything from pouring the concrete basement to building the house. He enjoyed watching the deer and wildlife from their home and loved to hunt and fish. He was an active member of the Appleton Sportsman Club for many years. He enjoyed outdoor cooking and cooked for many gatherings whether at their home or for friends. In recent years, he purchased a turning lathe and made many beautiful wooden items which he sold at craft fairs where he enjoyed visiting with people. He also enjoyed growing tomatoes and giant pumpkins. Above all, he loved being with his kids and grandchildren…whether it was getting computer help on the phone from his grandson, Robert, or watching his granddaughters, Taylor and Tracy, racing cars. He was very proud of Dan being in the military and was proud of his children and grandchildren growing up to be responsible young adults. Bob was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Appleton where he served as an usher.
Robert is survived by his wife, Diane; daughter Kristy (Swede) Arneson of Pillager; son Daniel (Debra) Fried of Palmer, Alaska; 3 grandchildren: Robert Fried of Palmer, AK, Taylor Arneson of Brainerd and Tracy Arneson of Fisher; sisters: Janice (Dean) Skallerud of Buffalo, Marlys Lund of Rapid City, SD, and Carol (Gary) Nygard of Appleton; sister-in-law, Janice (Cordell) Lindahl of New Auburn, WI; brother-in-law, Larry (Sharon) Clark of Madison; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Pearl Fried; parents- in-law, Otis and Marie Clark; brother-in-law, Wayne Lund; and nephew, Eric Nygard.
Blessed be his memory.
