Lucille Rutledge
June 4, 1914 — August 21, 2017
Lucille was born on June 4th, 1914 above the harness shop in Kerkhoven, MN to Edward and Christine Kennedy. She was baptized at the Church of Sacred Heart on June 28, 1914 by the Reverend W.P. Walsh. She grew up and attended school in Kerkhoven, MN through the 8th grade. She had a dream of finishing school and becoming a teacher. Although she didn’t realize this particular dream, Lucille was extremely intelligent and well-spoken. She taught numerous children through her love and time in countless ways throughout her lifetime.
Lucille was united into marriage to Joseph Rutledge on November 12th, 1931 at the Parish House in Willmar, MN by Reverend Patrick Kenny. This union was blessed with their two children, Edward and Mary Jane and Joe’s children, Anna and James. Joe and Lucille farmed south of DeGraff and Murdock until they retired in 1967 and moved to their new home in Murdock. They were married for 50 years until Joe’s death in 1981.
Lucille enjoyed every day to its fullest bringing smiles to all. She especially loved children, and would spend time with and help care for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren well into her 90’s. She baked daily until the age of 100 and would share her freshly made treats with whoever happened to stop by for coffee. She frequently mailed her baked goodies to her grandchildren who lived farther away. She was affectionately called “Gram or Granny Lucy” by most who knew her. Daniel O’Donnell was her favorite music artist who she met in person and owned every CD he ever recorded! She also enjoyed going “south fabric shopping” to the casino with her friend Marge.
Lucille was an active member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Murdock and received the Bishop’s Medal of service in March of 2000. She was involved in the council of Catholic Women, Mission Group, RCIA sponsorship, made baptismal gowns for parish baptisms, and cooked many special meals for the bishop and area priests for special occasions. Lucille was very active in Kavanagh-Helgeson VFW auxiliary.
Lucille is survived by her daughter, Mary Jane DeVaan (Paul) Cantleberry; grandchildren: Debora (Tom) Berres, Catherine DeVaan (Kevin Kravik), Joseph (Susana) DeVaan, Mary (Bob) Walsh, Edward (Julie) DeVaan, Steven (Sandy) DeVaan, Catherine (Michael) Knapp, Sara Cantleberry (Tom Haush), Richard Walsh (Linda), Patrick (Kathy) Walsh, Jean (Jim) Hilleren, Colleen Campbell, Robert (Marcia) Rutledge, Linda (Butch) Carlson, Barb Rutledge, Connie Rutledge, Greg Rutledge, Lenny (Patty) Rutledge, Tom (Melanie) Rutledge and Mary Lynn (Jay) Smith. She is also survived by her many great and great-great grandchildren, sister-in-law Jeanne Kennedy and many nieces and nephews.
Lucille was preceded in death by her parents; husband Joseph, children: Edward, Anna (Jim) Walsh, and James (Gertie) Rutledge; and son-in-law, Jack DeVaan. Grandchildren: George Rutledge, Francis Walsh, Sarah and James DeVaan, Doug Bjork, Randy Campbell and great-grandson Cody DeVaan. Sisters: Myrtle, Helen, Mary, (their spouses), and Delores and Evelyn. Brothers: Donald, James, Willis “Bill”, (their spouses), and LeRoy “Bud”.
