Richard "Dick" Robert Timm

November 2, 1926 — August 16, 2017

Richard Robert Timm was born November 2, 1926 in Plankinton, South Dakota, the son of Curt T. and Alma (Kerr) Timm.  Dick’s family moved to Correll, Minnesota, where his father was the Correll School Superintendent.  Later, they moved to a farm in Shible Township, Swift County, Minnesota.  He graduated from Appleton High School in 1944.  After high school, Dick attend the University of Minnesota in St. Paul until he was drafted in 1946.  Dick joined the United States Marine Corps, where he served at Paris Island, SC and Camp Lejeune, NC.  Upon completion of Sea School, he was stationed on the battleship USS South Dakota in San Francisco until it was decommissioned.  He had 22 different addresses in 18 months!  Upon his return to Minnesota, Dick enlisted in the MN National Guard.  When the Appleton National Guard Unit was deployed to Camp Rucker, he didn’t have to go, because two of his brothers, Tom and Harry, were already in active duty service.  Dick was allowed to stay home and help his father on the farm.

On October 25, 1953 he was united in marriage to Janice Kern.  They made their home on the Timm home farm.  This union was blessed with over 63 years together and four children: Debbie, Terry, Renee, and Robert.  In addition to farming, Dick worked for ASC for 10 years sealing grain bins.  He was a clerk for Shible Township for over 15 years, was a lifetime member of the United Methodist Church, and a member of the VFW and American Legion.  Dick liked to participate in many sports, including baseball, softball, bowling, and golf.  He also enjoyed watching sports…he attended the MN State High School Boys Basketball Tournament, every year, well into his 80’s!  Playing cards was another of his favorite pastimes, especially Bridge.  He loved to garden and always found room for tomatoes, radishes, pumpkins, squash, and watermelon.

Dick passed away Wednesday, August 16, 2017 in West Wind Village in Morris.  He attained 90 years, 9 months, and 14 days of age.  He is survived by his wife, Janice of Appleton; children: Debbie Reimnitz of Kalispell, MT, Terry Walker of Appleton, Renee (Bo) Olson of Pillager, Robert (Lana McCarthy) of Mocksville, NC; 6 grandchildren: Rick (Maggie) Walker, Christopher (Eunhee) Walker, Curt (Michelle) Reimnitz, Zach Reimnitz, Rachel Reimnitz, and Tanner Olson; 4 great-grandchildren: Madilyn, McKenna, Elsie and Lillian Walker; step-mother-in-law, Lilly Kern; sisters-in-law: Esther Timm, Judy Timm, Sally (Don) Johnson, Shirley (Ted) Visser; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.  Dick was preceded in death by his parents, Curt and Alma Timm; parents-in-law, Lawrence and Florence Kern; brothers: Thomas, Harry, and John “Fritz” Timm; sister, Mary (Lloyd) Dedon; brother-in-law, Doug (Wanda) Kern; sister-in-law; Betty (Stub) Scholtes; nephews: David Scholtes and Chad Timm.
