Irene Mildred Goldenstein was born August 1, 1929 in Crate Township, Chippewa County, Minnesota, the daughter of Jacob and Mamie (Heikes) Stegeman. Irene entered her heavenly home on June 11, 2017.
Irene grew up and went to school in the Maynard area where her parents farmed. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Clara City, MN. She was currently a member of Our Redeemer’s Lutheran Church, Benson, MN.
On February 4, 1948, Irene was united in marriage to Leo Goldenstein at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Clara City, MN. This union was blessed with six children. Leo and Irene farmed in the Clara City area until 1961 when they moved to a farm in Swenoda Township, Swift County near Benson, MN. Leo and Irene farmed until Leo’s passing in May, 1985. Irene moved into her home at 1101 Homewood Drive, Benson in 1988. Currently she resided at the Meadow Lane Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center, Benson, MN.
Irene enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. She also enjoyed gardening, canning fruits and vegetables, embroidery, and other hand work. Irene and Leo enjoyed farming, fishing, dancing and traveling. Irene was active in the Our Redeemer’s Mission Circle, Ladies Aid, Altar Guild and many other church activities. She was an active member of the Benson V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary and the Swift County Extension Homemakers.
Irene is survived by six children: Roger (Doris) Goldenstein, Benson, MN, David Goldenstein (fiancé Myra Gomez), Edgewood, NM, Susan (Barry) Hennen, Morris, MN, Judy (Dan) Doose, Vernon, TX, Alan (Tamraa) Goldenstein, Willmar, MN, and Cindy (Brad) Dukowitz, Staples, MN; twenty-two grandchildren; and forty-five great-grandchildren. Also surviving are sisters-in-law: Vernice Stegeman and Fern Stegeman, both of Raymond, MN.
Irene was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Leo in 1985; her brothers: William, Ray, Henry; and sister Gertie Rand.
