Delmont Laverne Dahl

December 21, 1930 — April 15, 2017

Delmont Laverne Dahl was born December 21, 1930, in Langhei Township, Pope County, Minnesota, the son of Guy O. and Gladys E (Halvorson) Dahl.

He was baptized and confirmed at East Zion Lutheran Church in rural Starbuck.

He completed 8 years at Dist #51 school before entering the work force with his Mom & Dad.

His brother Walter graduated in 1944 from Starbuck High School and was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1945.
This left Delmont at age 15 to be the big brother to Irene and Darwin and the helper on the farm that Mom and Dad needed.

He was the best worker and helper they could have asked for.

When Grandpa Dahl died they divided the farm and houses and he helped Dad build up the new buildings on the farm as well as doing the field work and chores.

While both brothers, Walter and Darwin, were gone for 40 years – he remained by their side and saw them into retirement and moving off the farm.

He had many jobs working as a helper on farms, or at Simonson Oil filling your car with gas and he loved working on cars too! He was a special crossing guard for the children at school for years also.

He really enjoyed delivering machinery for Bertus Implement and couldn’t say enough about how good a guy he was to work for.

Over the years, we saw each other many times – in Texas – Minneapolis – Colorado – and for our parent’s birthdays on Memorial Day weekend.

I had the privilege of moving back to Benson in 1998 and it’s been my pleasure, as the youngest sibling, to look after the older ones and especially Delmont these last 7 years.

He loved people and visiting them in the nursing homes - whenever and wherever he could.

He and Rosella were married in 1963 and she passed away in October 2007.

Her granddaughter Shari said this about Delmont, “He loved us like his own grandchildren and we saw his love for the Lord and for our Grandma Rose.” She also wrote on Facebook: “I will cherish the memories I have of him as he is the only grandpa figure I ever knew. His hand written letters he sent me with Bible passages are very special to me. How fitting that he meets his Savior on Easter weekend. Prayers to you and your family.”

Delmont had a smile a mile wide when you met and always had something good to say in the end. He worked on being “ready” to meet the Lord.

His reading of “the Word”, especially the Fruits of the Spirit in Galatians 5, kept him studying about God’s love, joy, peace, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, patience, and self-control.

He truly was “Living for Jesus” and on his tombstone are the words Jesus Our Hero!

Delmont is survived by his brother Darwin (Marge) Dahl of Benson; his sister-in-law Evelyn Dahl of Cloquet; his stepson Roger (Pat) Olson of Newton, KS and their 3 children: Shari, Randy and Kathy; and 9 great-grandchildren. He also is survived by many nieces and nephew; and many cousins and friends; and a very special Aunt Elaine and Uncle Sheldon Lewis.

He was preceded in death by his parents Guy and Gladys Dahl; his wife Rosella; his brothers Howard and Walter, and his sister Irene and her husband Thomas Graham.
