Donald Bernhard Jaeger

July 25, 1921 — March 14, 2017

Donald Bernhard Jaeger, age 95, of Benson, Minn., died Tuesday, March 14, 2017, at Golden Living Center – Meadow Lane. Visitation will be from 10–11 a.m., followed by the funeral at 11 a.m., Monday, March 20, 2017, at Our Redeemer’s Lutheran Church in Benson. Interment will be in the Benson City Cemetery.

Donald B. Jaeger was born July 25, 1921 to Ernest and Josephine (Hippe) Jaeger in Cashel Township.
He was baptized and confirmed at Our Redeemer’s Lutheran Church. He went to country school and then graduated from Benson High School in 1940. He lettered in football under Leon Brockmeyer for the Benson PlowBoys, now known as the Benson Braves.
He married Gladys Gronseth from Kerkhoven, Minnesota in 1944.
Donnie only wanted to be known as a laborer and farmer. Farming was in his blood from a young age of farming with his dad. He worked at J.C. Penny’s when he was 20 years old and broke horses for Ed Shumbaum, who he later cared for so Ed could stay in his home. He rented the Payne and Troseth farms for 10 years before he and Gladys moved to Benson.
He then worked 20 years for Howard Ogle’s Produce, selling feed and running the feed grinder until he became manager.
He did the “Howard’s Checkerboard Prolex” radio program. He was very excited and nervous the first time and said “bring in your can of eggs and your case of cream”.
He did many other jobs too, working as a laborer at Munson Seed, realtor estate sales, home building, and delivered fuel.
He bought his father’s farm in 1975 and other land after that.
At age 73, he started working for Amundson’s Construction on the cement crew.
Donnie was a humble but generous man. He was a wonderful father, father-in-law, grandfather and great-grandfather often going to almost all of his grandkids various sporting events.
Donnie and Gladys were blessed with 2 children: Candace (Dale) Nelson of Eden Prairie and Dean (Jane) Jaeger of Rochester; 4 grandchildren: Jay (Joleen) Hanson of Alberta, MN, Lance Jaeger of Arvada, CO, Lisa Jaeger of Wabasha, MN, and Aaron (Michelle) Jaeger of Lakeville, MN; 12 great-grandchildren: Justin Hanson, Thomas Wulff, Jacob Hanson, Gwyneth Hanson, Marshall Augeson, Grace, Bo, Dakota, Jericho, Everett, Oakley, and Laney Jaeger; and Adam Foslien, neighbor and friend who was just like a grandson.
He is survived by his children, grandchildren, and one great-great-granddaughter, Arya Hanson.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Gladys; his parents, Ernest and Josephine Jaeger; and two brothers, Kenneth Jaeger and Boyd Jaeger.
This is a celebration of Donnie's life.
