Charles "Chuck" Stevens

April 9, 1921 — March 10, 2017

Charles Phillip Stevens was born April 9, 1921 in Granite Falls, Minnesota, the son of Sam and Levina (Gullickson) Stevens.  He was raised in the Hanley Falls area, where he was baptized and confirmed into the Lutheran faith.  Chuck also spent time as a youth in the Wendell, Elbow Lake, and Fergus Falls areas, graduating from Elbow Lake High School in 1939.  He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps on July 27, 1942.  Chuck served overseas in the Pacific Theatre from January, 1943 to May, 1944.  On May 6, 1947, he was united in marriage to Myrtle Manthei by Pastor Edward Martin.  This union was blessed with over 63 years together and two sons: David and Daniel.

Chuck worked as a farm laborer and at a grain elevator in his early years.  He also worked as a Service Rep for Ottertail Power Company for 32 years.  Later in life, he and his wife, Myrtle, owned and operated a Stevens Nursery and Landscaping in Appleton for many years.  He was a long-time member of the First United Methodist Church in Appleton, a past Troop Leader for the Boy Scouts, past Appleton School Board member, and was a member of the Masonic Order.  Chuck enjoyed hunting and fishing, golf and traveling…he was able to travel to all 50 states!  He especially enjoyed spending time with his family and with his beloved dog, Sadie.

Chuck died Friday, March 10th in Appleton Area Health Services –Care Center.  He attained 95 years, 11 months, and 4 days of age.  Chuck is survived by his sons: David Stevens of Hyder, AK and Daniel Stevens of Appleton; grandsons: Ty Stevens of Austin, TX and Easton Andreas of Montevideo; Goddaughter, Darcy; sister-in-law, Mary Stevens of Mansfield, OH; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Myrtle in 2010; parents, Sam and Levina Stevens; brothers: Archie, Ray, Marvin, Larry, LaVern, and Leslie Stevens; infant brother, Charles Stevens; and sister, Wilma Bailey.
