Ellen Marie Puchalski was born on December 7, 1951 in Benson, Minnesota, the daughter of Fred Albert and Alice Lucille (Darling) Hoiland. She was baptized at First Lutheran Church in Benson and confirmed on October 30, 1966 by the Rev. Melvin Sucher. She grew up on a farm north of Holloway, Minnesota and her family moved to Benson in 1967. During high school, Ellen worked at the Benson Bakery. She graduated from Benson High School and moved to St. Cloud to attend St. Cloud Beauty College, graduating on April 29, 1970.
On August 7, 1971, Ellen was united in marriage to Otto “Butch” E. Puchalski at Our Redeemer’s Lutheran Church in Benson by Rev. Ernie Mancini. This union was blessed with over 45 years of marriage, 3 children and 6 grandchildren. Ellen was a beautician for 39 years and through the years she worked at Diane’s Swirl and Curl, Hair Works, Hair Hut, and Scofield Place. Upon her retirement, she co-owned Bugs and Flowers, where she enjoyed making floral arrangements, and was a receptionist at Don’s flooring.
Ellen was a member of Bowling League, the Benson Sports Boosters, and served on the Alter Guild and Smorgasbord Committee at Our Redeemer’s Lutheran Church. She enjoyed baking, cooking, painting, sewing, scrapbooking, decorating, gardening, watching and attending her children’s and grandchildren’s activities, traveling, and floral design.
She was called from this life on Tuesday, January 10, 2017 at the Fairview Southdale Hospital in Edina, Minnesota. She attained the age of 65 years, 1 month, and 3 days.
Ellen is survived by her husband, Otto “Butch” Puchalski of Benson; her three children: Joy (Terry) Negen of Marshall, Cara (Dan) Hoover of Willmar, and Troy (Kayla) Puchalski of Pennock; six grandchildren: Maloy, Drew, Natalie, Ethan, Jett, and Claire; siblings: Barbara Razink of Willmar, David (Diane) Hoiland of Buffalo, and Kay (Orleigh) Pring of Alexandria; sister-in-law, Marlys Hoiland of Benson; and several other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Alice; a brother, Roger; godparents, Roy and Rhoda Holzheimer; father and mother-in-law, Otto E. Sr. and Fern Puchalski; step-father-in-law, Alfred Platow; and other family members. Blessed be her memory.
