Lawrence Schake, age 86, of Appleton, died Sunday in Madison Healthcare Services- Hospital. The Schake’s will greet family and friends on Saturday, January 7th, 1pm to 3pm, at Zniewski Funeral Home –Vaala Chapel in Appleton. Burial will follow at the Appleton City Cemetery. No formal service will be held.
Lawrence Howard Schake was born on May 26, 1930 to parents LeVerne and Louise (Steffen) Schake on a farm near Louisburg, in Lakeshore Township, Lac Qui Parle County, MN. He attended country school up to the 6th grade and then helped his dad and other farmers in the area. Lawrence’s dad owned and operated Schake’s Service in Bellingham and he worked with him. Later that year, the family moved to Bellingham. From 1949 to 1951, Lawrence drove semi-truck.
Lawrence entered the United States Army on September 29, 1951, serving during the Korean War. When home on leave, he was united in marriage to Emma Weller on December 30, 1951. He was honorably discharged on September 20, 1953. After his discharge Lawrence and Emma moved to Appleton Minnesota and he worked for Appleton Oil Company from 1953 until his retirement in 2010. Lawrence was a life member of the V.F.W. Post 4955 in Appleton. Lawrence enjoyed hunting, fishing, watching the Twins and Vikings, playing cards, and visiting with family and friends. In September 2012, Lawrence went into the Appleton Nursing Home and was transferred to the Madison Lutheran Home in September 2016.
Lawrence passed away December 18, 2016 at the Madison Healthcare Services –Hospital at the age of 86 years, 6 months and 22 days. He is survived by his wife Emma of nearly 65 years, his daughters: Scheral (Gary) Ninneman of Ortonville, MN, and Donna Shepersky of Litchfield, MN and his son: Larry (Polly) Schake of Madison, MN. He is also survived by 7 grandchildren: Jason, Tanya (friend Josh), Jacklin (Justin), Jeremiah (Amanda), Michael (Corrine), Elijah (Kristina), and Ashley (fiancé Scott); 12 great-grandchildren and 3 step great-grandchildren. He is survived by his sisters: Elda Bjork of Redwood Falls, MN, Lucille Hansen of Canby, MN, Elnora (Chad) Orton of Delhi, CA, and Pearl (Dave) Gednalske of Rapid City, SD and brothers: Ben Schake of Waterloo, IA and Donald Schake of Madison, MN; several sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law as well as many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. Lawrence was preceded in death by his parents, sisters: Gladys Schake, Irene Wertz, Marie Hovel and brothers: Alvin and Ernest Schake.
