Alvin (Bud) Weckwerth of rural Benson died at his home on December 16, 2016 at age 91, good-humored to the end. He was born September 18, 1925 in Montevideo, Minnesota, one of seven children of Louis and Martha Weckwerth. He was baptized and confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Montevideo.

Bud grew up hunting, trapping, and fishing, and working for neighboring farmers. He served in the Marine Corps, attended Dunwoody Institute, and worked as an electrician. He married Marion Ahrndt in August, 1954 and they farmed south of Benson, where Bud milked cows and raised hogs, poultry, and assorted crops. If you drove Highway 29 south of Benson, you may have seen his tall, pyramid-like haystacks that towered over the farm buildings. Bud and Marion also raised seven children and spent 62 years together as hard-working, devoted parents and grandparents.

During that time, Bud milked his cows over 30,000 times with few vacation days. He attended hundreds of 4-H meetings, high school wrestling matches, and band and choir concerts. Even with this schedule he managed to fit in some hunting and fishing and taught his kids to love these activities as well. He also taught his kids to work hard, to learn constantly, to play whenever possible, to laugh a lot, and to sit still in church. After retirement, Bud started turkey hunting and went canoeing in the BWCA. He gardened, planted trees, read countless books, helped his sons Gary and Dean on the farm, and played about 10,000 games of Hearts on his computer. Most of all, he enjoyed spending weekends at the family lake cabin fishing, playing cards, watching his grandkids fish and swim, and exaggerating the size of his fish.

Bud was a member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Benson, where he served on various boards, attended Bible study, taught Sunday School, and occupied the second pew from the back on the left side of the church every Sunday. His faith sustained him during his life and provided a model for his kids.

Bud is survived by his wife, Marion, two brothers: Lewis, Merle (Verlie), sister-in-law Marie Weckwerth, seven children: Gary (Mary) Weckwerth, Brent (Ruth) Weckwerth, Dean (Kathy) Weckwerth, Craig (Jody) Weckwerth, Rick Weckwerth, Jeff (Melissa) Weckwerth, Lisa (Jeff) Jewison, 15 grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and 4 siblings: Lawrence, Arnold, Alice Olson, Silda Adams.

His family and friends will miss him. But anytime that they gather, you can bet there will be stories and laughter… :)
