Victor Olson, age 98, of Little Falls, formerly of Appleton, died Thursday in St. Gabriel’s Hospital in Little Falls. Visitation will be Tuesday, November 1st, Noon to 1p.m., followed by the funeral at 1p.m., at Zion Lutheran Church in Appleton, officiated by Rev. Linda Lagergren. Burial will be in Appleton City Cemetery.
Victor Olson was born June 17, 1918 to Martin & Clara (Snelling) Olson in Swift County. He was baptized into the Christian faith and confirmed on September 25, 1932 at West Bank Lutheran Church of rural Danvers. He grew up in the West Bank Township of rural Danvers and attended country school District #85 in the Big Bend Area. As a young man, he worked on farms up to when he entered the United States Army on April 22, 1942. Victor served his country during World War II and was a Private First Class (PFC) of the 235th Quartermaster Battalion (Mobile). He drove truck in Algeria, French Morocco, Tunisia, and Naples. Victor was honorably discharged on July 31, 1945 and he returned to farming. He is registered at the National Memorial in Washington D.C.
On June 10, 1947, Victor was united in marriage to Helen Evelyn Torgerson. This union was blessed with over 60 years of marriage and 2 children, Eunice & Harlan. He farmed in the Appleton area and purchased a farm north of Appleton. Victor farmed until retirement and then moved to Appleton and did carpentry work until moving to Little Falls Assisted Living. He was a member of Appleton VFW Post # 4955 and Zion Lutheran Church. Among the things Victor enjoyed were spending time with the family, making wood crafts, fishing, playing cards, and many years of old-time dancing. His greatest enjoyment was his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Victor passed away October 27, 2016 at St. Gabriel's Hospital in Little Falls, MN. He attained 98 years, 4 months and 10 days of age.
Victor is survived by his children: Eunice (Del) Schmitz of Red Lake Falls and Harlan (Marlene) Olson of Little Falls; 5 grandchildren: Jason (Sandra Van Hey) Lanning, Vance Lanning, Jackie (Brian) Popp, Jennifer (Jesse) Burich, and Jessica (Craig) Medek; 8 great-grandchildren: Dawson and Lola Lanning, Hunter and Lindsay Popp, Ellie, and Emma Burich, Aidan and Abby Medek; sister, Myrtle Thompson of Appleton; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen, on June 10, 2008; sisters: Thelma Jervey, Viola Thompson, and Vivian Grinager; brothers: Walter, Melvin, and Clifford Olson; granddaughter-in-law, Charity Lanning.
