Sylvester “Ollie” Moist, age 87, of Willmar, formerly of Benson, died Friday in the St Cloud Veterans Hospital Community Living Center. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service at the church, with the Rosary starting at 10 a.m.

Sylvester “Ollie” Moist was born August 24, 1929 in Benson, Minnesota to Oliver and Ethel Moist. From an early age Ollie lived with the Robert Dolan family in Danvers. He graduated from Benson High School in 1947. Ollie played football in high school and played baseball on the Danvers town league team. He entered US Air Force in 1951. While in the Air Force, Ollie studied dental assistance at the USN Technical School in Great Lakes, Illinois. Leaving the Air Force in 1955, he worked at grain elevators in Danvers and Benson for many years. Ollie also worked for Tyler Mfg., the Chippewa Valley Ethanol Plant, and the Heartland Girls Ranch. Ollie married Louise Tuttle in 1976. They were married until her passing in 1992.

His interests included woodworking, gardening, fixing small engines, participating in Habitat for Humanity projects, and he was an avid baseball fan. In recent years, he enjoyed spending time in Arizona. He was especially proud of his “apple tree”, given to him by his step-grandson, that turned out to be a prime producing pear tree. Ollie was a member of the Knights of Columbus since age 15. He was also a member of the VFW.

He is survived by his step-children: Larry (Lucretia) Buroker of Coon Rapids, Lou Ella (Dwight) Brown of Benson, Lola (Gary) Lane of Apache Junction, Arizona, Jim VanderWeyst of Appleton, and Tony VanderWeyst of Benson; and numerous step-grandchildren. Also surviving are his siblings: Cleo (Myrna) Moist, David Moist, and Darlene (Don) Flower; three half-sisters: Judy Skoglund, Linda (Kenneth) Wrobleski, and Elaine Jobgen; sister-in-law, Jane Moist; many nieces and nephews; and his life time friends, John and Elaine Carruth of Danvers. Ollie was preceded in death by his wife, Louise; parents, Oliver and Ethel Moist; and siblings: Elaine (Moist) Cameron, Roy, Bessie, and Benjamin Moist. Blessed be the memory of Ollie Moist.
