Ruby M Higdon

December 2, 1922 — September 22, 2016

Ruby M. Higdon was born on December 2, 1922 in Woods Township, Chippewa County, Minnesota, the daughter of Clarence and Rose Josephine (Friedlein) Valentine. She grew up on a farm south of Murdock, Minnesota. She was baptized at Kerkhoven Lutheran Church by Rev. E. R. Weeks on May 22, 1927. On June 29, 1941, Ruby was united in marriage to George Franklin Higdon at the Kandiyohi County Courthouse by Rueben Bengsten. Together they shared in over 74 years of marriage. They lived in the Benson area until her husband joined the United States Air Force and they traveled across the United States and the World for the next 28 years. She lived in Japan, the Azores, and many different states. Upon his retirement in 1971 they returned to Benson.

Ruby was a member of the VFW Auxiliary and served as VFW Post 1403 President and as the President of the VFW Auxiliary 5th District. She belonged to the Pilgrim Congregational Church of Christ in Benson. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, reading, crossword puzzles, watching Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy, playing bingo and going to the casino. Ruby loved to spend time with her family. She was called from this life on Thursday, September 22, at the Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar. She attained the age of 93 years, 9 months, and 20 days.

Ruby is survived by her children Nellie (Chester) Amis of Harrisonburg, Virginia, Clarence Higdon of Jackson, Melanie (John) McMillion of Two Harbors, Victor Higdon of Clontarf, and Rosalie (Scott) Huston of Benson; 19 grandchildren; 38 great grandchildren, and 2 great great grandsons; a sister Joyce Smith of Benson and a brother Lee Valentine of Canon City, Colorado. She was preceded in death by husband George Franklin Higdon on December 31, 2015, her parents Clarence and Rose Valentine, a daughter Connie Kennedy, and son Clyde Higdon, and siblings Ray Valentine, Caroline Cain, Harvey Valentine, and Gayle Almquist. Blessed be the memory of Ruby M. Higdon.
