George Michael “Mike” McCarthy, age 73, of Starbuck, MN, died Friday, August 26, 2016, at the Glenwood Retirement Village. Visitation will be from 5 – 7 p.m. Thursday, September 1, 2016 at St. Francis Catholic Church in Benson. Visitation will continue from 10 – 11 a.m., followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. on Friday, September 2, 2016, at St. Francis Catholic Church.

George Michael “Mike” McCarthy was born September 30, 1942 in DeGraff, Minnesota to George James and Beverly (Nelson) McCarthy. He grew up and graduated from Benson High School in 1960 and then the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. Mike began his extensive military career when he joined the Minnesota National Guard in May of 1966 in Morris. He attended basic training at Ft. Leonardwood, MD and then Advanced Individual Training at Ft. Knox, KY. Mike attended Officer Candidate School and was commissioned a Second Lt. in 1968 and attended Armor Officer Basic in 1969. He served as platoon leader in a Reconnaissance Platoon in St. Cloud and as executive officer Company B, Willmar, and then as motor officer and S-4 at BN Headquarters in St. Cloud.

Mike was united in marriage to Myrtrice A. Knutson on October 15, 1976 in Eagen, Minnesota. He and Myrt enjoyed more than 39 years of fun and laughter.

In May of 1980 to 1983, Mike was company commander at Co. C., 1/136th Inf. Sauk Centre. He commanded 179 soldiers and received the adjutant general’s 100% unit strength award. In 1984, he was assigned supply and services office at the Installation Support Unit at Camp Ripley. From there he transferred to State Area Command as examiner / auditor for United States Property and Fiscal Officer. In 1991, Mike was promoted to Lt. Col. He was very proud to serve his country in the National Guard. His many awards showed his dedication. He retired from the Minnesota Army National Guard in 2002.

Mike loved spending time with his family and especially enjoyed camping, fishing, playing games, and talking with them. He will be missed and fondly remembered.

Mike died on August 26, 2016 at the Glenwood Retirement Village. He attained 73 years, 10 months and 26 days of age. He is survived by his wife, Myrt McCarthy of Starbuck; children: Nancy (Tom) Moline of Sauk Rapids, Lori (Pat) Hawley of Benson, Marcia Schuerman of St. Cloud, Steven (Kathy) Schuerman of Austin, TX, Jackie Schuerman (Randy Johnson) of Sauk Rapids, and Scott Schuerman of Sartell; grandchildren: Heather Moline, Hilary (Chris) Thue, Chris Moline, Nick Forbord, Ashley Schuerman, Cheyenne Hanson, and Cody Hanson; great-grandchildren: Brittany, Brady and Brooklyn Madden, Chance Moline, Parker Klemm, Mila and London Thue; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, George J. and Beverly McCarthy; and two sisters: Jackie Hagen and Catherine Peterson.
