Visitation will be held 5 – 7 p.m. on Monday, August 22, 2016, at Zniewski Funeral Home in Benson. Visitation will continue on Tuesday, August 23, 2016, from 9 – 10 a.m., followed by the Funeral Service at 10 a.m., at the Glenwood Retirement Village Chapel.
Marvin M. Mauch was born June 20, 1917 in Goodrich, North Dakota to Theodore and Lydia (Martin) Mauch. He grew up and graduated from High School in Goodrich and then completed one year at North Dakota State College of Science in Wahpeton. Marvin served his country during World War II in the Infantry from 1941 – 1945 in the South Pacific Theatre. On September 1, 1946, he was united in marriage to Jean Augustadt. This union was blessed with two children, three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Marv owned and operated Mauch’s Super Valu in Benson for many years. After his retirement, Marv continued his passion for food and fellowship when he developed a hog-cooking service and a unique cooker, which he named "Marv's Two Wholer". This device allowed him to cook two whole hogs at one time. Marv and Jean spent many weekends traveling with their cooker to Minneapolis and St Paul, providing food and fellowship to many groups, not the least of which was heart surgeon John Najarian.
Marv was a proud member of the 164th Infantry Regiment, American Legion, Guadalcanal Association, and Veteran of Foreign Wars. Marv felt it was very important for the younger generation to understand the magnitude of war and the sacrifices made by so many that he volunteered to share his WWII experiences in local schools. In 2011, he was able to go on the Honor Flight to Washington D. C. with his grandson, Russell. The highlight of Marv's trip was his visit to the WWII Memorial.
Marv moved to Lowry in 2007, when his wife became a resident of Glenwood Retirement Village. He developed a strong relationship with GRV staff and residents. He volunteered tirelessly helping with Bingo, visiting residents, always ready with a smile and a hug. He became the "acolyte" for the GRV chapel, lighting candles and getting hymnals ready. He was always ready to help a wheel chair bound resident get to coffee after services or back to their room by pushing their chair. GRV nominated him twice as a Pope County Senior Volunteer of the Year.
Marv enjoyed exercising three times a week at the Minnewaska Lutheran Home. He always had a joke to share and often led the class.
Marv loved a good game of Whist and played every Tuesday at the Senior Center in Glenwood and every Thursday at Holly Ridge in Starbuck. He was a much sought after playing partner.
Marvin died on August 18, 2016 at the Glacial Ridge Hospital in Glenwood, MN. He attained 99 years, 1 month and 28 days of age. He is survived by his children, Deborah Holmes of Lowry and Brian Mauch of St. Paul; grandchildren, Russell (Molly) Holmes and Matthew (Emily) Holmes; great-grandchildren: Dylan Holmes, Jackson Holmes, and Owen Holmes; and sisters, Melva Schlinder of McClusky, ND and Milda “Tootie” Hertz of Glendale, AZ.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Theodore and Lydia Mauch; his wife, Jean Mauch on May 31, 2009; and one grandson, Andrew “Andy” Holmes.
May God richly bless his memory.
