David James Terlouw

David J. Terlouw, age 63, of Benson, Pope County, Minnesota, died Thursday, January 21, 2016, at home.

Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, January 25, 2016, at the First Evangelical Free Church in Benson. Visitation will be held Sunday, January 24, 2016, from 3-5 p.m. at Zniewski Funeral Home in Benson and for one hour prior to the service. Burial will be held in Iowa at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred.


David James Terlouw, age 63, was born on May 4, 1952 in Lynnville, Iowa, the son of James and Donna (Leafgreen) Terlouw. He grew up in the Lynnville and Sully, Iowa area. As an adult, David was baptized in a river in Idaho in 1971. He attended school at Lynnville–Sully High School and completed four years at Bethel College.

On September 27, 1980, David was united in marriage to Cynthia Lorraine Cox at the Church Upon the Rock in Mounds View, Minnesota, by Rev. Clay Christensen. After living in the Twin Cities for many years, they made their home in Benson in 1993.  David initially worked 10 years at the Heartland Girls Ranch, and then for Runnings Fleet Farm in Benson, the Swift County HRA, and Prairie Community Services in Morris. He was an avid collector of baseball cards, coins, and minerals, and enjoyed treasure hunting. He was a political activist and served as a mentor to many. David was called from this life on Thursday, January 21, 2016 at his home in rural Pope County, Minnesota.

David is survived by his wife, Cynthia Terlouw of Benson; his children: Nicole (Carlos) Terlouw-Coleman of Atlanta, Georgia, Naomi Terlouw of Minneapolis, and Noah Terlouw of Minneapolis; 1 granddaughter, Laila Coleman, and expecting a granddaughter in May, 2016; and two brothers, Dennis Terlouw of Newton, Iowa and Douglas Terlouw of Sully, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Donna; and one brother, Daryl Terlouw.
