LaVerne M. Skarsten, 83, died on Friday, December 11, at the Swift County Benson Hospital. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, December 15, at 11:00 am, at Pilgrim Congregational United Church of Christ in Benson. Visitation will be held from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm, on Monday, December 14, at the Pilgrim Congregational United Church of Christ in Benson, and continue on Tuesday for one hour prior to the service at the church. Zniewski Funeral Home of Benson is in charge of the arrangements.
LaVerne M. Skarsten was born on April 3, 1932, in Benson, Minnesota, the son of Melvin Palmer and Lillie Idaline (Reme) Skarsten. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. He grew up in Swift Falls and graduated from Benson High School. He served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War from 1951 to 1954. LaVerne was united in marriage to Lorraine Smith on February 22, 1953 at Pilgrim Congregational Church in Benson. He enjoyed fishing, gardening, playing Buck and Whist, going to the casino, and watching sporting events.
He is survived by his children: Sandra (Bruce) Bernardy, Keith (Janelle) Skarsten, Bradley (June) Skarsten, all of Benson, MN, Gary (Chris) Skarsten of Phoenix, AZ, Steven (Paulette) Skarsten of Lincoln, CA, and Kevin (Jara) Skarsten of West Fargo, ND; 14 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; a brother Sanford (Carol) Skarsten of Swift Falls; sisters-in-law: Carole Anderson of Benson, Darlyne Smith of Benson, and Peggy Skarsten of Benson; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Melvin and Lille, his wife Lorraine, and a brother Myron.
