Laverna Emma Emily Morken was born January 2, 1920, in Shible Township, Swift County, Minnesota, the daughter of Arthur and Alvina (Rau) Stock. She was baptized on January 25, 1920, by Rev. Waechter and was confirmed on April 9, 1933, by Rev. Gierke, both at Immanuel Lutheran Church -Shible Township. Laverna was raised on the home farm, near Appleton. She attended Christian School in Shible Township for 8 years and then attended Appleton High School, where she graduated in 1938. On April 10, 1940, Laverna was united in marriage to Clayton Smith. This union was blessed with three sons: James, Donald, and Darold. Over the years Laverna worked as a seamstress for Sealy Mattress Company for 17 years and she also owned and operated Gopher Café in Madison for several years. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Appleton, where she participated in Bible Study and Birthday Club. Laverna died Thursday, July 23, in Appleton Area Health Services -Nursing Home. She attained 95 years, 6 months, and 21 days of age. Laverna is survived by her children: James (Judy) Smith of Appleton, Don (Jane) Smith of Colorado Springs, CO, Darold (Robin) Smith of Lafayette, CO, step-daughter, Judy (Bob) Mangel, CO; 5 grandchildren: Mike (Kasie) Smith, Paul Smith, Daniel (Peggy Sue) Smith; Jodie Peterson, Dean (Tina) Smith; 9 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great grandchildren; 4 step-grandchildren: Dawn (Jay) Baker, Tami (Dean) Mazzuca, Denice (Dan) Anderson, Randy (Leah) Mangel Sr.; 12 step grandchildren; 7 step-great-great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She is preceded in death by her parents, Arthur and Alvina Stock; husband, Clayton Smith on February 12, 1977, and Mayne Morken on February 22, 1998; daughter-in-law, Jan Smith; grandson, Dodd Smith; step-son, Terry Morken; great-granddaughter, Amber Anderson; sister, Delores Dorff; and brothers: Ralph and Donald Stock.
