He grew up on a farm 12 miles north of Appleton, attended country school through the eighth grade, and then graduated from Appleton Area High School. Dennis served his country in the United States Air Force during Vietnam from 1965 to 1969. After his tour of duty, Dennis served with the United States Air Force Reserves for seven years. On November 13, 1976, Dennis was united in marriage to Joyce Faye Hadler in Benson, Minnesota. This union was blessed with 38 years of marriage.
