Dorothy Marcella Smith was born October 13, 1928 at Edison Township, Swift County, Minnesota, the daughter of John and Theresa (Kashmark) Rudnick. She attended school in Appleton and graduated from Appleton High School in 1947. Dorothy was united in marriage to Howard J. Smith on December 31, 1947. This union was blessed with four children: Cheryl, Duane, Lori, and Cindy. During her working years, Dorothy was employed as a waitress, clerk for the City of Madison, and clerk for the City of Hutchinson. Dorothy retired from her position with the City of Hutchinson in 1992. In 1995 she moved back to her hometown of Appleton, where she was a clerk for Brown and Baker Auctions and also worked at the municipal liquor store. Dorothy enjoyed sewing, quilting, knitting, gardening, reading, and traveling. She was a member of the Red Hat Society, various groups at church, Bridge Club, Quilting Club, Ladies VFW Auxiliary, and the local Tractor Club. Dorothy was dedicated to her family and loved to cook for them - the kitchen was the busiest room in the house. She enjoyed hosting company and always made strangers feel welcome. Dorothy truly made a difference in every life that she touched. Dorothy died Sunday, January 18, 2015, at Appleton Area Health Services -Nursing Home. She attained 86 years, 3 months, and 5 days of age. She is survived by her children: Cheryl (Donald) Heimerl of Madison, Duane (Kathryn) Smith of Cambridge and Cindy (Timothy) Olson of Belle Plaine; 13 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; brother, Ron (JoAnn) Rudnick of Appleton; sister, Bernadine (Lewis) Miller of Canby; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She is preceded in death by her husband Howard in 1992; daughter, Lori Smith in 2010; sister, Nellie (Schlueter) Schliep; and brother, Edward Rudnick. Blessed be the memory of Dorothy M. Smith.
