James Joseph Ascheman was born August 15, 1928, in Clontarf Township, Minnesota, the son of Alfred and Vina (Newell) Ascheman. He was baptized, confirmed, and grew up in Clontarf. Jim attended school in Canastota, New York and Clontarf, Minnesota before graduating from Agriculture School in Morris. Jim served in the United States Army during the Korean War from 1948 to 1951. On April 5, 1952, Jim was united in marriage to Carol Spangler at Fort Smith in Arkansas. This union was blessed with more than 62 years of marriage, three children, and seven grandchildren. Jim farmed in rural Clontarf, served as City Clerk of Clontarf, and was a Benson School Board Member. He always enjoyed fishing, four-wheeling, hunting, working, and spending time at their Arkansas and Arizona homes. Jim died on Saturday, October 25, 2014, at the Swift County Benson Hospital in Minnesota. He attained the age of 86 years, 2 months, and 10 days. Jim is survived by his wife, Carol Ascheman of Clontarf; children: Gary (Sheila) Ascheman of Willmar, Sonia (Pete) Batinich of Maple Grove, and Karen (Mark) Bertram of Fergus Falls; grandchildren: Landon Ascheman, Amanda Ascheman, Bethany Hardy, Matt Batinich, Nick Batinich, Kim Bertram, and Michael Bertram; siblings: Geneva Cameron of Benson, Don (Bess) Ascheman of Davenport, FL, Mick (Gladys) Ascheman of Lonsdale, Donna (Vernon) Chevalier of Benson, Shirley Schumacher of Amery WI, Pat (Clayton) Staton-Vlasak, Alfred (Jan) Ascheman of New Richmond, WI; and many nieces, nephews and other relatives. He was preceded in death by his parents, Alfred and Vina (Newell) Ascheman; mother and father-in law, Mary and George Spangler; brothers, Jack Ascheman and Brother Linus Ascheman. In lieu of flowers memorials are welcome and will be distributed to local charities.
