Susan K. Massey was born July 1st 1950 in Appleton to parents Conrad and Signora Byre. She grew up on the family farm in Drywood Country. She went to country school until seventh grade when she began Appleton High School. There she met her fortunate husband Rich Massey. Susan graduated from AHS with honors in 1968 and went off to Concordia College in Moorhead. She graduated with honors in 1972 and married. The couple both taught for five years in Frost, Minnesota. When her first child Jake was born, the couple moved back to Appleton to raise their children in their favorite place on earth. With the help of the grandparents and their good friends and neighbors the Fetts and Thompsons, Susan and Rich raised their sons. After son Will was born, Susan worked with Barb Ronning at the pre-school. Later, Susan began to teach again in the elementary school for the next 18 years. Susan was a great homemaker and accomplished cook like her mother Signora. She was a voracious reader who was rarely without a novel. Shopping with her mother Signora, and her friends DeVonne and Peggy was a wonderful pleasure for Susan. Susan was a dedicated Methodist and participated in her church's activities faithfully. In later years, Susan and Rich traveled often and Susan especially enjoyed her trips to China to visit her son and daughter-in-law and beloved grandchild Emma Sue. Susan had many dear friends in the community and loved to join "the girls" at dice club and card club. Susan had much fun over the years with her Brustuen clan and thought a lot of her relatives. Susan died Monday evening September 30, 2013 in the loving care of the Appleton Nursing Home and her husband and son. God be praised. She had reached the age of 63 years and three months. She is survived by her husband Richard Massey of Appleton, her son Jake and his wife Yu Dan of Dandong, China and her son Will Massey of Appleton. She is also survived by her precious granddaughters Emma Sue and Olivia Anne Massey of Dandong, China. Preceding Susan in death are her parents, Conrad and Signora Byre and her brother Calvin Byre and his wife Victoria Byre.
