Joseph James Vlach, age 93, of Benson, passed away on Monday, September 2, 2013, at the Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar, Minnesota. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, September 7, 2013 at the St. Francis Catholic Church in Benson, Minnesota, with Father Steve Verhelst officiating. Visitation will be held for one hour prior to the service. Arrangements are with the Zniewski Funeral Home in Benson. Joseph James Vlach was born July 29, 1920, in Cumming County, Howells, Nebraska to Louis and Frances (Malek) Vlach. He was baptized and confirmed at St. John's Catholic Church in Howells and attended country school in Cumming County. On December 10, 1942, he was united in marriage to Kathleen Rose Zelenda at S.S. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church in Clarkson, Nebraska. They farmed in Cumming County until purchasing a farm in Swift County, near Benson, Minnesota, moving here in 1956 where they farmed until retirement in 1984. He is survived by his wife, Kathleen; daughter, Patti Madden of Benson; sons, Joseph Jr. (Julie) of Benson and Rod (Diane) of Willmar; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren; a sister, Emily Miller of Omaha, Nebraska; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, one sister, a niece, a nephew, and a son-in-law. He enjoyed making wood crafts, and refurbishing antique farm machinery.
