Gertrude I. Simonson, was born on May 31, 1922, on the family farm in Cashel Township, Swift County, Minnesota, the daughter of Frank and Marie (Heggestad) Jacobson. She was baptized on July 1, 1922, at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Benson. She grew up on the farm in Swift County and attended district 21 country school and later graduated from Benson High School. Gert was united in marriage to Melvin Simonson on August 21, 1948 in Benson, by the Rev. Nasheim. This union was blessed with one daughter and over 30 years of marriage. They lived in Benson, and Gert worked at Rangaard's Café, Benson Produce, Fingerhut, Jenny 0 Turkey Company, and for the Swift County Museum. She loved to read, cook, and served as the family historian. She enjoyed getting together with her friends and family. Gertrude was called from this life on Wednesday, July 10, 2013, at the Minnewaska Lutheran Home in Starbuck. She attained the age of 91 years, 1 month, and 10 days. Gert is survived by her daughter Sandra (Donald) Zimmel, of Brooklyn Park; two grandchildren, Mark Zimmel and Ellen Zimmel; and many other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin in 1979, her parents Frank and Marie, and a brother Lloyd Jacobson.
