Benson - Esther P. Vergin, age 99, of Benson passed away on Thursday, May 9, 2013, at the Homestead North Care Center in Benson. Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, May 14, 2013 at 11:00 a.m., at the St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Benson with Rev. Dennis McManus officiating. Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Monday, May 13, 2013 at the St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Benson. Visitation will continue on Tuesday at the church for one hour prior to the service. Esther Pauline Vergin was born on February 25, 1914, in Cashel Township, Swift County, to Ole and Ella Teoline (Myhre) Kolstad. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. Esther grew up on her parent's farm in Cashel Township, Swift County. She attended Country School District 71 through the 8th grade and Benson High School for two years. On July 2, 1936, Esther was united in marriage to Walter Vergin at the Our Saviors Lutheran Church. They farmed in Cashel Township for over 40 years and shared more than 60 years of marriage. Esther was a member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church groups. She enjoyed quilting, sewing, canning, fishing, puzzles, playing cards, reading, and spending time with her family, friends, and grandchildren. She was called from this life on Thursday, May 9, 2013, at the Homestead North Care Center in Benson. Esther attained the age of 99 years, 2 months, and 14 days. She is survived by her children: Joan (Gerald) Johnson of Boulder City, Nevada, Linda Carstens of Benson, MN, Ramona (Walter) Young of Benson, MN, Roger (Shirley) Vergin of Plato, MN, Dennis Vergin of Minneapolis, MN, Jane Lee of Benson, MN, David Vergin of Benson, MN, Donald (Nancy) Vergin of Benson, Gail (Rodney) Skowronek, of Forest Lake, MN, Gary (Sharon) Vergin of Willmar, MN, and Gene "Chuck" Vergin of DeGraff, MN; 23 grandchildren; and 40 great-grandchildren. Esther was preceded in death by her parents, Ole and Ella Kolstad; her husband, Walter W. Vergin, on April 10, 1997; one son, Floyd Vergin, on December 22, 2012; three grandchildren: Gil Johnson, James Vergin, and a baby granddaughter; and son-in-law, Kenneth Carstens.
