Harvey Leonard Schlueter was born March 6, 1921, in rural Holloway to parents Leonard and Emma (Petrick) Schlueter. He was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church, Fairfield Township and attended country school through the eighth grade. Harvey grew up on a farm using draft horses for field work. As a youth he rode in horse races at surrounding county fairs. He farmed with his father until he moved to San Diego, CA, in 1941. He worked at Boeing Aircraft factory for $.50 an hour until receiving his draft notice in 1942. Harvey served in World War II in the Army's 40th Engineer Combat Battalion with campaigns in Sicily, Naples, Foggie, Arno, Rome, southern France, Rhineland, Africa, and Central Europe. He received the European-African-Middle Eastern Theatre service medal, four overseas service bars, the Bronze Service arrowhead, and the World War II service medal. He was honorably discharged in October of 1945. On May 18, 1946, he was united in marriage to Louise Bonk at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Holloway. The couple was blessed with six children. They resided in the Holloway area all of their lives where Harvey farmed and raised Quarter horses. In 2001, Harvey retired from farming. He was a member of the American Legion, the VFW, and the Trail Blazers Saddle Club. He loved horses and had many draft horse teams he was proud of. He enjoyed giving family and friends wagon and sleigh rides. He rode on trail rides and, as a member of the saddle club drill team, carried the American flag in parades. Harvey loved to go out and have a good time and was an excellent dancer. He also enjoyed hunting, ice fishing, going to the Clear Lake Rodeo, traveling to his Army reunions, family trips, and spending winters in Arizona with his sons. He loved having all the grandchildren stay at the farm. Harvey was a talented handyman who could build or fix anything, and was a master at the art of rope making.
