Gaylen Judell Borstad was born Mary 3, 1929, in Lac qui Parle County to Oscar and Mabel (Mikkelson) Borstad. He was baptized at his parents' home in May of 1929 and was confirmed April 2, 1944, at Zion Lutheran Church. July 29, 1947, he was married to Mary Ann Leaf. He worked with his father, Oscar, and then with Pearson Buick in Benson. He and his brother-in-law, Howard Leaf, were in partnership and later Gaylen went into business for himself at "Borstad Motor Sales". Gaylen also started an auto salvage in the 80's. After retiring from the auto business he and his son, Philip, started "The Wood Shed". Gaylen and Gary then started "Appleton Video" and later Gary sold his share of the business to his brother, Philip. Gaylen was active with Appleton Video until late in 2010. Gaylen enjoyed hunting, fishing, driving around with his wife, old country music, big band music, and tunes of the'50's. Gaylen, Mary Ann, Bob Hanson, and Sam Mills enjoyed playing cards together. Gaylen particularly liked being active with his grandchildren. Gaylen died on Sunday, April 14th, at Appleton Area Health Services. He had attained 83 years, 11 months, and 11 days of age. He is survived by two children: Gary (Monica) Borstad of Appleton and Marcy (Dave) Basten of Grantsburg, WI; daughter-in-law, Pamela Borstad, of Appleton; four grandchildren: Michael (Tammie) Borstad, Ryan (April) Borstad, Jacob Irgens, and McKenzie (Brandon) Dahl; nine great-grandchildren: Megan, Julia, Claire, and Leo Borstad, Rya and Harris Borstad, Jada and Ryder Irgens, and Sawyer Dahl, and two great-grandchildren expected this summer; and other relatives. Gaylen is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Mary Ann, on November 25, 2009; son, Philip Borstad; and great-grandson, Porter Dahl.
