James Edward Matthews

November 1, 1920 — January 5, 2013

James Edward Matthews was born on November 01, 1920, in Kildare Township, Swift County, Minnesota, the son of Edward H. and Mary A. Goggin Matthews. He was baptized and confirmed in the Catholic Faith at St. Bridget's Catholic Church in DeGraff. He grew up in Kildare Township and attended District #5 country school, and later graduated from Benson High School. James served his country in United States Army during World War II. He served in North Africa, Sicily, and Italy. On August 30, 1951, he was united in marriage to Mary Katherine Simon, by Father John Rivard, at St. Anne's Catholic Church in Sommerset, Wisconsin. This union was blessed with over 61 years of marriage. They farmed in Kildare Township. James was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Murdock, where he served as an usher, a lifetime member of the V.F.W. and American Legion, the Knights of Columbus, and served as a director of the Swift County Museum. He enjoyed sports, fishing and hunting, and loved to spend time visiting with his family and friends. He was called from this life on January 05, 2013, at the Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar. He is survived by his wife Mary of Willmar, a son Daniel Matthews and Dan's daughter Jessica, of Craig, Colorado and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers, and four sisters. In Lieu of flowers the family prefers memorials to Rice Hospice, the Parkinson Foundation, or to the organization of the Donor's choice.
