Milton Oscar Running

Milton Oscar Running was born March 31, 1929, in Chippewa County to parents Oscar and Margaret (Erickson) Running. He was baptized and confirmed at Kviteseid Lutheran Church in Milan. Milton graduated from Milan High School with the Class of 1947. On December 18, 1953, he entered the US Army and served until his honorable discharge on November 28, 1956. April 2, 1955, Milton was united in marriage to Delores M. Bersie at the First United Methodist Church in Appleton. In 1957 Milton and Delores began farming. They farmed in Edison and Appleton Townships from 1957 until 1983. In 1983 Milton was diagnosed with ALS, Lou Gehrig's disease, and was unable to continue farming. He was a member of Milan American Legion Post No. 359, Appleton VFW Post No. 4955, and Kviteseid Lutheran Church where he had served on several of the church's boards. Milton enjoyed fishing trips, Tuesday night bowling league, their cabin on Lake Scandinavia, playing cards, and wintering in Mesa, AZ 1984-2004. Milton taught patience and dignity in day-to-day living situations living with a terminal illness. He had a great sense of humor and loved a good story. Milton had a great love of the land, love of home, and a great love for family and friends. Milton died on Friday morning, January 4, at Appleton Area Health Services. He had attained 83 years, 9 months, and 3 days of age. He is survived by his wife, Delores, of Appleton; four daughters: Cathy (Ted) Albers of Appleton, Julie (Randy) Barnes of Alexandria, Carol (Arvin) Fisher of Rochester, and Susan (Dirk) Foster of Vienna, Austria; nine grandchildren: Paul Albers of Burnsville, Brent (Ammie) Albers of Thief River Falls, Gregory (Jani) Barnes of Raleigh, North Carolina, Emily Barnes and Megan Barnes both of Alexandria, Jake Fisher of Grand Forks, ND, Laura Fisher of Rochester, Katelyn Foster of Seattle, WA, and Malia Foster of St. Paul; sister Iola (Arden) Pearson of Milan, brother-in-law Merlyn Bersie of Appleton; nieces, nephews, and other relatives. Preceding Milton in death are his parents, Oscar and Margaret Running; his siblings: Orvil and Judy Running, Ruby and Melvin Sundahl, and Alva and Cleo Clausen; and his sister-in-law, LaVonne Bersie.
