In Lieu of flowers, family prefers memorials which will be used at Northside Elementary School in Benson. Candace Anne DeHaan was born May 26, 1945 in Sioux City, Iowa, the daughter of William Tobias and Florence Elizabeth (Kautz) Miller. She grew up in Sioux City and attended school there. After graduation, she attended four years of college at the University of South Dakota and Dakota State College. On November 25, 1966, Candace was united in marriage to Dennis Verne DeHaan in Sioux Falls by Rev. Laack. The couple was blessed with one child and nearly 44 years of marriage. Candace was an elementary teacher and taught in Madison, South Dakota from 1966 - 1973, one year at Royalton, one year at Owatonna, and in November of 1975, moved to Benson, where she has worked since. Candace was a Title One teacher and in 1986 became leader of the Title One Program at Northside Elementary in Benson. She was a member of Pilgrim Congregational United Church of Christ, where she served on numerous boards and committees. Among the things she enjoyed were camping at Hobo Park in Starbuck, reading, traveling, and especially spending time with her grandchildren and attending their activities. Candace was called from this life on Monday, November 22, 2010 at her home. She attained the age of 65 years, 5 months and 26 days. Candace is survived by her husband Dennis of Benson; her son Jeff (Sarah McGeary) DeHaan of Benson; three grandchildren: Morgan, Brennden and Brady DeHaan; a sister, Harriett (Gary) Shockey of Redlands, CA; brother-in-law, Jim (Donna) DeHaan of Piedmont, SD; sister-in-law, Lori (Gary) VanDenBerg of Sioux Falls, SD; nephews Chad VanDenBerg of CA, Greg Shockey, Jeff Shockey; and a niece Cindy Marcy; and other relatives and friends. Preceding her in death were her parents, William and Florence.
