Austin Daniel McGeary was born July 3, 1919, in Marysland Township, Swift County, Minnesota, the son of Patrick Ignatious and Mary (Hughes) McGeary. He was baptized as an infant and confirmed into the Christian faith by Bishop Murray at Visitation Catholic Church in Danvers. He grew up on a farm near Danvers, attended grade school at District #60 and graduated from Benson High School. He worked at Perrizo's Produce. Austin served his country in the 25th Infantry of the United States Army from 1942 to 1945 during World War II, and was awarded the Bronze Star. On September 24, 1946, Austin was united in marriage to Irene Gertrude Banken. They were blessed with four children and 65 years of marriage. Austin farmed in Marysland Township for over 40 years, then retired and moved to Danvers. Austin was a member of Church of the Visitation Catholic Church in Danvers, and served on the council and cemetery board. He was awarded the Bishop's Medal for Service. He also was a member of the Knights of Columbus, the VFW, and the Senior Citizens; he served as treasurer on the town board. Among the things he enjoyed were golfing, dancing, gardening, woodworking, playing cards and visiting with people. Austin was called from this life on Thursday, December 1, 2011 with his wife and family by his side. He attained the age of 92 years, 4 months and 27 days. Austin is survived by his wife Irene McGeary of Benson; his children: Collette (Tom) Garrity of Forest Lake, Colleen (Steve) Larson of New Brighton, Kevin (Jane) McGeary of East Bethel, and Tony (Sue) McGeary of Eagan; nine grandchildren: Mark Larson, Kristen Larson, Nick McGeary, Christopher McGeary, Allison Garrity, Connor McGeary, Marie McGeary, Kira McGeary, and Kaitlin McGeary; four great grandchildren: Lily McGeary, Wendy Ritter, Shelby Larson and Sydney Larson; and other relatives and friends. Preceding him in death were his parents; his brothers: John, Francis, Chester, Harold, Leo, Cornelius, and Patrick McGeary; his sisters: Mary Mahoney, Agnes McGeary and Ann McGeary; and his grandchildren: Andrew and Ashley McGeary.Memorials preferred to Hospice or Visitation Catholic Church in Danvers.
