Maynard J. Shelstad was born on May 04, 1923, in Synnes Township, Stevens County, to parents Martin and Inga Kleppe Shelstad. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. He grew up in the Drywood area and attended country school there. Maynard served his country in both WWII and the Korean War. On July 02, 1966, Maynard was united in marriage to Bettie Rien in Alberta Minnesota. They were blessed with five children. Together they shared in 43 years of marriage. They lived in rural Alberta, rural Appleton, Correll, and Montevideo. He worked as a gravel truck driver in road construction for Minnesota Valley/Mooney's. He enjoyed fishing, visits to the casino, watching NASCAR, traveling to Norway, Sweden, Alaska, Hawaii, Tennessee, Mexico, Branson, and Albuquerque. Maynard loved spending time with family and friends. He was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church and the Appleton VFW. Maynard was called from this life on Saturday, June 19, 2010, at Luther Haven Nursing Home in Montevideo. He attained the age of 87 years 1 month, and 15 days. Maynard is survived by his wife Betty of Montevideo; a son Michael (Mary) Block of Correll; four daughters, Vicki (Elwood) Sorenson of Montevideo Beth (Pat) Schroeder of Canby, Donna (Lyndon) Wilberg of Alexandria, and Debi Shelstad of Montevideo; 7 grandchildren, Erik and Krist Sorenson, Lisa Block, Amy Shumacher, Jesse and Micah Christenson, and Brian Wilberg; 12 great grandchildren; a brother Eldon (Ina) Shelstad of Alexandria; sisters Bernice Grams of Salem OR, Shirley Byman of Wheaton, Dorris (Glenn) Matejka of Brandon, and Arlene (Richard) Knutson of Garfield, MN, and numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives. He was preceded in death by his parents Martin and Inga Shelstad.
